Police officer who shot Daunte Wright resigns

  • On Tuesday, officials announced that Kim Potter, the police officer identified in the shooting of 20-year-old Daunte Wright, has resigned. Tim Gannon, the police chief of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota (where the shooting occurred), has also resigned 
  • Protests spread across the country starting Monday after footage released showed Potter fatally shooting Wright during a traffic stop. So far, no charges or arrests have been made or announced

Biden to withdraw troops from Afghanistan by September 11

  • It was reported that President Biden plans to announce on Wednesday that the US will withdraw all of its troops from Afghanistan by September 11, the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks that prompted American military involvement in Afghanistan
  • The withdrawal plan will pass the May 1 deadline that the Trump administration had established in a deal with the Taliban last year. Biden previously warned that it would be tough to meet the May 1 deadline, citing the delay in the presidential transition process after the 2020 election

Japan to release treated Fukushima water into Pacific ocean in two years

  • On Tuesday, the Japanese government announced plans to begin releasing treated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant meltdown into the Pacific Ocean in two years
  • The water will still have trace amounts of radioactive material, which has sparked criticism and protest from the local fishing community, environmental groups, and Japan’s neighbors. However, the government has assured that the water will not pose a threat to people or the environment
Context: In 2011, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck Japan, which was the strongest earthquake in the country’s history. It triggered a tsunami, which damaged the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, causing damage to the reactors that contaminated their cooling waters, which then began to leak

Apple expected to announce new products on April 20

  • On Tuesday, Apple announced a product launch event to be hosted on April 20, which is set to be the company’s first product event of the year
  • Part of the launch will reportedly introduce new additions to its iPad Pro and iPad mini lineup, as well as the newest AirPods model

Amazon workers vote not to unionize

  • Last Friday, Amazon workers in Alabama voted not to form the company’s first union in America
  • After the vote, the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union, stated it will challenge the vote by filing unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board, alleging that Amazon broke the law with some anti-union activity in the build-up to the vote

FDA and CDC recommend pausing Johnson & Johnson vaccine

  • On Tuesday, the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that the CDC will review six cases of "a rare & severe type of blood clot" that formed in people who received the Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine
  • Both agencies recommended that the distribution of the vaccine should be paused until the review process is complete. The White House has stated that the pause won’t significantly impact its vaccine distribution plans
