Stimulus bill agreement reached 

  • Tuesday night, Senate leaders reached an agreement with the White House to pass a $2 trillion stimulus package working to protect the economy from the havoc wreaked by the coronavirus
  • The agreement indicates that the bill will pass in the House when it is voted on Wednesday. After tense negotiations, the bill is expected to send direct payments to states, businesses, and individuals facing loss of funds 


Lockdown in Wuhan to be lifted on April 8th 

  • Wuhan, the Chinese city where the coronavirus outbreak originated, has reported no new cases since last week. After two months on lockdown, the city announced Tuesday that they would end their lockdown within a month 
  • Many European countries have also gone into lockdown in an attempt to slow the spread of the virus. While the loosening of restrictions in Wuhan is good news, it may not be the same elsewhere for quite some time


2020 Olympics postponed 

  • After much deliberation, the Japanese government and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided that the Summer Olympic games, in light of the coronavirus pandemic, will be postponed until 2021 
  • Despite the change in date, the event will retain its title of “Tokyo 2020,” named after its location 
  • While the games have been canceled in the past, this is the first time in history that they have been postponed


Siri’s racial bias revealed 

  • According to a new study published in the journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, there is racial bias in major speech recognition systems 
  • Software from Google, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, and others make more errors with users of color as opposed to white consumers

Infection rate in New York doubling every 3 days 

  • According to NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo, there is a “dramatic increase in the rate of infection,” of COVID-19 in New York 
  • The state is in dire need of ventilators and other medical supplies as the crisis worsens, and medical workers are at increased risk of infection due to supply shortages
  • As of Tuesday night, New York had nearly 16,000 cases and 192 deaths. The state has tested around 91,000 people, the most of any U.S. state 


Stocks rebound in face of stimulus bill 

  • Due to the optimism attached to the multi-trillion stimulus bill just passed by Congress, stocks rebounded from a three-year low  
  • As of Tuesday, the Dow Jones leapt 11.3%—nearly 2100 points—, the S&P is up 9.3%, and the Nasdaq is up 8.1%
