Kyle Rittenhouse charged with homicide

  • Kyle Rittenhouse, the 17-year-old that killed two people and injured a third at a Kenosha, Wisconsin Black Lives Matter protest has been charged as an adult with two counts of first-degree homicide and one count of attempted homicide
  • Rittenhouse also faces charges of reckless endangerment of the safety of two other victims and illegally possessing a weapon under the age of eighteen

India sets record for daily coronavirus cases

  • With 78,761 new cases reported on August 30th, India passed the United States for the highest new reportings of coronavirus in a single day

  • Despite a surge in active cases, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi continues to push for a return to normalcy in order to lessen the forthcoming economic hit

Japanese PM Shinzo Abe resigns

  • Shinzo Abe, Japan’s longest-ruling Prime Minister to date, has resigned citing health issues
  • "I cannot be prime minister if I cannot make the best decisions for the people,” said Abe during a live broadcast, adding: "unfortunately, there are still issues that are unresolved but there are also many accomplishments."
  • Abe will hold his position until a new leader is chosen, likely in the next month. Abe’s successor is expected to be a fellow party member close to his administration

MGM Resorts lays off 18,000

  • Casino mogul MGM Resorts International informed upwards of 18,000 furloughed employees that they would be released from the company as the coronavirus pandemic continues to hit the travel and service industries
  • The company stated that employees who are laid off will remain within the company’s recall list through 2021, and if hired back, will retain seniority and benefits
  • MGM Resorts joins Coca-Cola and United Airlines as large corporations that have recently announced large layoffs amid the ongoing pandemic

Elon Musk unveils Neuralink brain implant

  • Elon Musk unveiled his startup Neuralink’s technology to build a digital link between brains and computers this weekend
  • The demonstration, using a pig named Gertrude, was able to show the pig’s brain activity as it performed standard activity
  • Musk’s startup has ambitions to break into the medical industry, using the Neuralink technology to help patients deal with brain and spinal cord injuries

Chadwick Boseman dead at 43

  • “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman died of colon cancer late Friday night. Boseman’s publicist Nicki Fioravante stated that Bodeman passed at his home with his wife and family by his side
  • Boseman had kept his cancer diagnosis under wraps, the news of his illness braking alongside the notice of his death
  • Boseman, who played Jackie Robinson in the 2013 film “42,” died on Major League Baseball’s Jackie Robinson Day
  • Expressions of shock poured out of Hollywood into the early hours of Saturday morning, being described as “a crushing blow” by director Jordan Peele
