Global coronavirus deaths exceed 800,000

  • The global coronavirus death count exceeded 800,000 this past weekend as countries like India, the U.S., and Brazil continue to struggle to contain the virus
  • Both the U.S. and Brazil currently have a fatality rate of about 3%, which is lower than the global average of 3.5%, though experts are concerned with the lack of any planned response from either country
  • Over 170,000 people have perished in the U.S., the highest number of any country in the world


Trump’s sister criticizes him in leaked audio

  • In a secretly recorded conversation, Maryanne Trump Barry, the older sister to President Trump, disparaged her brother as a “liar” with “no principles
  • In the tapes, Barry claims that Trump doesn’t read, and described the President as “cruel and a phony”
  • Barry also claims that she did his homework for him while he was in school before dropping the bombshell: “He went to Fordham for one year [actually two years] and then he got into University of Pennsylvania because he had somebody take the exams.”


TikTok to sue Trump

  • The social media app TikTok plans to sue the sitting President of the United States after he threatened to outright ban the app within the country amid security concerns
  • In a statement, Tiktok told CNN "To ensure that the rule of law prevails and that our company and users are treated fairly, we have no choice but to challenge the Executive Order through the judicial system
  • Last month, Microsoft stated that they were in advanced talks with Tiktok owner ByteDance to acquire the U.S. operations of the app


Republicans to test hybrid RNC

  • The Republican party will attempt to conduct a hybrid National Convention this coming week, with a mixture of live and taped events
  • Much like the democrats did, these measures are being taken in order to combat the spread of COVID among attending politicians
  • Democrats held their National Convention completely online, finding success, as there were no hiccups or delays throughout the entire process

Trump ordered to pay $44,100 in legal fees

  • A California court ordered Trump to pay $44,100 to Stephanie Clifford, the adult-film actress known as Stormy Daniels, to cover her legal fees regarding her nondisclosure agreement
  • The legal fees were accumulated after Clifford sued the President over an issued NDA over an affair the two had from 2006 to 2007, which Trump attempted to pay off Clifford to remain quiet about
  • In March 2018, Clifford filed a lawsuit against the president, in an attempt to reverse the NDA, claiming that it was not valid, as Trump never signed it


MLB postpones New York Mets’ games due to positive COVID tests

  • Major League Baseball has postponed the weekend series between the New York Mets and the New York Yankees after several Mets players tested positive for coronavirus
  • The Mets join a growing list of teams forced to postpone games because of coronavirus, including St. Louis and Miami
  • The Mets are anticipated to be able to resume their season on Tuesday
