Supreme Court rejects Trump’s attack on DACA

  • The Supreme Court voted 5-4 Thursday to block the Trump administration from ending DACA, a 2012 program that protects immigrants who arrived illegally as children
  • Chief Justice John Roberts called the administration’s actions “arbitrary and capricious,” arguing it did not provide a reasoned explanation for pursuing the action
  • Trump responded to the decision on Twitter, saying “These horrible & politically charged decisions coming out of the Supreme Court are shotgun blasts into the face of people that are proud to call themselves Republicans or Conservatives”


Brazilian police arrest former government aid

  • Brazilian police arrested a former aid to President Jair Bolsonaro’s son on Thursday in a graft investigation
  • Fabricio Queiroz, aid to Senator Flavio Bolsonaro when he was a Rio de Janeiro state lawmaker, allegedly embezzled $230,000 from the state assembly
  • President Bolsonaro claimed Queiroz was targeted for a “spectacular arrest,” as if he were “the greatest thug on earth”


IMF predicts US economy to continue to decline 

  • The IMF said the US economy would contract deeper than expected in the second quarter due to a defacto lockdown lasting longer than anticipated
  • The IMF’s best-case scenario in April predicted a contraction of 5.9% in 2020
  • In comparison, China’s economy is gaining momentum with a stronger-than-expected recovery in investment and services through May, the IMF said


Facebook removes Trump ads

  • Facebook took down several of the Trump campaign’s ads because they included an inverted red triangle Nazis used to identify political prisoners
  • The Trump campaign responded that “the inverted red triangle is a symbol used by Antifa, so it was included in an ad about Antifa,” adding that Facebook itself still has an inverted red triangle emoji

Injured NYC protesters voice anger 

  • At a virtual public hearing, New York City protesters displayed cuts, scars, bruises and other injuries they suffered during clashes with police
  • Mayor Bill De Blasio and the police commissioner defended the NYPD’s actions as mostly proportionate, claiming that misconduct was limited to isolated cases that were being investigated


Australia faces increased state-based cyberattacks

  • Australia warned other nations on Thursday that it is under increasing cyberattack from a “sophisticated state-based cyber actor”
  • Prime Minister Scott Morrison would not name the state, but said “there aren’t too many state-based actors who have those capabilities”
  • Morrison stated the attacks are targeting a range of sectors including “all levels of government, industry, political organizations, education, health, essential service providers and operators of other critical infrastructure”
