Republican leaders oppose commission into Capitol riots

  • On Wednesday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell stated that he did not support legislation that would create an independent, bipartisan commission that would look into the deadly insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6
  • McConnell joins House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy in opposing the legislation. While the legislation passed in the House with some Republican support, it may be harder for Democrats to gain the ten Republican votes needed in the Senate without McConnell’s support


Migrants enter Spanish territory of Ceuta

  • Over the past few days, thousands of undocumented migrants attempted to enter the Spanish enclave of Ceuta north of Morocco, deepening a diplomatic rift between the two countries
  • The influx of migrants prompted Spain to deploy armed forces and increase police presence at the enclaves to secure the borders. About half of the almost 8,000 migrants who arrived in Ceuta have been returned to Morocco


Study finds 20 companies are responsible for half of the world’s single-use plastic waste

  • On Tuesday, a report published by the Minderoo Foundation found that just 20 companies account for half of all the single-use plastic waste generated worldwide. The top three companies listed were Exxon Mobil, Dow Chemical Co., and Sinopec
  • Researchers also believed that those same companies could be responsible for as much has 10% of global greenhouse emissions by 2050


Google announces features at Google I/O

  • On Tuesday, Google held their annual developer conference and announced some new features including a smartphone camera that will be able to more accurately depict skin tones, a tool to help identify skin conditions, and AI-curated photo albums
  • Google also announced the beta version for Android 12 that will feature a brand new design based on a system called “Material You” and new privacy features

Texas governor signs abortion bill

  • On Wednesday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed a bill to ban almost all abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected. The legislation is set to take effect in September
  • Texas joins a growing number of states that have signed ‘fetal heartbeat’ abortion bills into law, however, the legislation in Texas is a bit different in that it will allow private citizens to sue an abortion provider or anyone else who may have helped someone get an abortion after the 6-week window 


European Union agrees to ease travel restrictions

  • On Wednesday, members of the European Union reportedly agreed on a plan to allow fully vaccinated travelers from outside the EU. The proposal would loosen the EU’s criteria for designating “safe” countries
  • The plan still needs to be formally adopted by the European Council, which sets the EU’s policy agenda. The eased restrictions would mean that fully vaccinated travelers would not need to quarantine or be tested when they arrive in the EU
