President Trump sues the NYT for libel

  • President Trump’s reelection team is suing the New York Times for an opinion piece written in March of last year that suggested an exchange of political assistance between Trump and Russia in the 2016 election
  • The eight-page complaint calls for the Times to counter the claims made in the op-ed and compensate for damages


Religious violence in India escalates  

  • new piece of legislation in India that provides non-Muslim religious minorities with an accelerated track to gaining citizenship has sparked violence across Delhi in recent days
  • Since the 2014 election of PM Narendra Modhi, India has seen a rise in Hindu extremism, awakening pre-existing religious tensions and prompting an outbreak of violence across Hindu and Muslim communities 


Parent company Walmart to sell a majority stake in Asda

  • Walmart has been looking for a majority-stake buyer for their UK-based supermarket, Asda, considering it as stock market flotation
  • The move is part of a larger project intended to scale back Walmart’s international operations in smaller markets in favor of higher-growth markets (like India and China)


Google teams up with Adidas to release smart clothing 

  • The Jacquard line, Google's smart clothing line, announced a collaboration with Adidas that will come in the form of a Bluetooth add-on that syncs with your mobile device
  • The program will allow users to control their devices through taps and gestures made on their clothing and accessories. It is expected to be launched March 10

US abroad students on trial in Italy for murder

  • Two students from California were accused of murdering a police officer during their study abroad semester in Italy. If convicted, they face life sentences in prison
  • As the students were outside of US jurisdiction when they committed their crime, they will be tried and punished by an Italian court


Manchester City files appeal against its ban from the UEFA

  • Earlier this month, Manchester City was banned for two seasons by the Union of European Football Association (UEFA) for breaching financial rules and failing to cooperate with investigators
  • The breach of the UEFA Financial Fair Play rules is being contested by the English soccer club as they fight against a $32.5M fine and 2-year ban
