20 individuals named in list of Trump pardons

  • On Tuesday, Trump announced the names of 15 individuals who would receive full presidential pardons and an additional five who would receive part of their sentences commuted
  • Among the roster are those who pled guilty in Robert Mueller’s investigation, military members, campaign aides, and various others involved in some criminal activity


Law enforcement use of drones banned in France

  • According to privacy rights group, La Quadrature du Net (LQDN), police use of drones during protests has been outlawed because it was decided that “there was serious doubt over the legality” of drone usage
  • As an ongoing part of police reform, the revised bill will protect a person’s rights to share videos of police brutality, as well as allowing drone usage to track individuals, but prohibiting their ability to “keep the peace”


DOJ sues Walmart pharmacy in opioid crisis scandal

  • Walmart, the world’s biggest retailer, is in the opioid crisis spotlight as they face accusations from the US Department of Justice of receiving bribes from narcotics companies and filling invalid prescriptions
  • Walmart’s legal team responded to the DOJ’s accusations by saying they were a “transparent attempt to shift blame from the [Drug Enforcement Administration] well-documented failures in keeping bad doctors from prescribing opioids in the first place”


New cryptocurrency regulations virtually erase anonymity

  • For cryptocurrency users seeking the anonymity and privacy of transactions that crypto coins such as Bitcoin (BTC) offer, new regulations from the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network pose a major impasse
  • For many of the currencies traded on Coinbase, the transactional records are public, and when coupled with the new requirement for spender–receiver identification, a user’s entire transaction history could be made public

COVID relief bill slammed by Trump

  • Upon reviewing the $900 billion relief bill President Trump demanded that Congress “increase the ridiculously low $600 to $2,000, or $4,000 for a couple. I am also asking Congress to get rid of the wasteful and unnecessary items from this legislation and to send me a suitable bill”
  • Also funded in the bill was the establishment of two Smithsonian museums, a ban on surprise medical bills, and restoration of Pell Grants for incarcerated students


News of US stimulus package shows mixed response on Asian markets

  • Following the announcement of the $900 billion stimulus on Monday, the fiscal response to the news in Australia’s S&P/ASX 200, Japan’s Nikkei 225 futures, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index futures only showed marginal movement
  • The muted global response to this news has shown a more cautious attitude towards US advancements in COVID response
