Biden supports waiving patent protection for coronavirus vaccines

  • On Wednesday, President Biden expressed his support for a World Trade Organization proposal to waive intellectual property protections for coronavirus vaccines, which would clear hurdles for countries struggling to manufacture their own vaccines
  • Biden stated that the coronavirus pandemic called for “extraordinary measures”, but the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, which includes major vaccine production companies like Pfizer and AstraZeneca, stated concerns that move could cause confusion between private and public partners and foster the production of counterfeit vaccines

Protests continue in Colombia

  • On Wednesday, protests in Colombia continued for the seventh day as increased violence has resulted in at least 24 deaths and hundreds more injured
  • The protests were initially sparked by a tax reform bill aimed to alleviate the country’s economic crisis but would raise taxes on essential items and public services
  • While Colombian President Ivan Duque has scraped the bill for now, protests have become a larger call for actions to address poverty exacerbated by the pandemic and police brutality

Peloton recalls all treadmills

  • On Wednesday, the fitness company Peloton agreed to voluntarily recall its Tread and Tread+ Treadmills over safety concerns following at least 72 incidents of things and people being pulled underneath the machine, including one incident that led to the death of a 6-year-old
  • The new decision marks a reversal in Peloton’s initial refusal to follow the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s earlier push for a recall
  • Following Wednesday’s decision, Peloton shares declined nearly 15%, wiping about $4.1 billion from its market value

Facebook upholds ban on Trump

  • On Wednesday, Facebook’s Oversight Board released a statement upholding the restrictions the social media platform placed on former president Donald Trump in January
  • The Board stated that while the short-term action to restrict Trump’s account was justified, the “indefinite” suspension was not, explaining the Facebook cannot ban a user without a policy explaining why and calling on Facebook to create concrete penalties outlining how it will handle severe violations of its rules

Federal judge overturns CDC’s eviction moratorium

  • On Wednesday, Judge Dabney Friedrich ruled that the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s national pause on evictions exceeded the agency’s authority and should be vacated
  • The CDC had banned evictions starting last September, with President Biden extending the expiration date through June. The decision potentially leaves many homeowners at risk of losing their homes about two months earlier than expected

US birth rate falls to its lowest point in 42 years

  • According to new data published by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of births fell 4% in 2020, dropping to its lowest levels since 1979 and following a multi-year trend of declining birth rates
  • Teen birth rates dropped significantly with births to 15-17-year-olds dropping 6% and births to 18-19-year-olds falling by 7%, both hitting record lows
