House Republicans remove Liz Cheney from leadership position

  • On Wednesday morning, House Republicans voted to remove Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney from her position as chair of the House Republicans Conference, the third top Republican position in the House 
  • Cheney is one of the few Republicans critical of former president Trump, being one of the ten Republicans who voted to impeach Trump earlier this year. After the vote, Cheney vowed to continue to fight against Trump

Amazon wins tax case against European Union

  • On Wednesday, Amazon won its appeal against the European Commission who ordered the company to pay $303 million in taxes to Luxembourg, stating that the EU failed to prove that an illegal tax advantage had been given to Amazon by Luxembourg
  • The case stems from a 2014 investigation into Amazon’s tax arrangements with Luxembourg, which concluded that the country had granted tax benefits of around 250 million euros to Amazon

BUSINESS 💰

Judge dismisses NRA bankruptcy case

  • On Tuesday, a Texas judge dismissed an effort by the National Rifle Association to declare bankruptcy, ruling that that organization had not filed bankruptcy in good faith
  • The bankruptcy trial had paused legal challenges the NRA was facing, including a lawsuit filed by the New York Attorney General accusing the organization of fraud and abuse. The ruling allows for these legal battles to continue

Snapchat suspends anonymous messaging apps

  • On Tuesday, the social media platform Snapchat suspended the use of two third-party apps, Yolo and LMK, that allowed users to send anonymous messages on the platform
  • The decision came after a mother of an Oregon teenager who died by suicide last year had allegedly been receiving bullying message through Yolo and LMK filed a lawsuit against Snapchat that holds the platform responsible for the teen’s death

Fuel shortage hits Southeast US after pipeline hack

  • On Wednesday, gas stations in the southeastern United States faced fuel outages following a hack that caused the Colonial Pipeline to shut down. The pipeline delivers nearly half of the diesel and gasoline used on the East Coast
  • As of Wednesday afternoon, 65% of all gas stations in NC, as well as 42% in GA, VA, and SC have run out of gasoline as panic-buying ensued 

CORONAVIRUS 🦠

States prepare to loosen coronavirus restrictions

  • On Wednesday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that California is planning to end its mask mandate next month when the state plans to fully reopen. A mask regulation will only be in place for large indoor gatherings 
  • On Tuesday, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster issued a mandate that prevented schools and local governments from creating mask mandates. McMaster also prohibited the use of vaccine passports in the state
  • New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut have also all announced that they plan to end most coronavirus restrictions in the coming weeks
