Officers arrested and charged for Rayshard Brooks’ murder 

  • Atlanta police officers Garret Rolfe and Devin Brosnan were both arrested and charged for the murder of Rayshard Brooks, an Atlanta man found sleeping in his parked vehicle last Friday. As the events escalated, Brooks attempted to flee with Rolfe’s stun gun in tow, and the officer fired three times, resulting in Brooks’ death
  • The county district attorney, Paul Howard Jr., stated that Brooks did not pose an imminent threat of death or serious injury to the officers
  • Video footage of the shooting is being used as evidence for the charged officers. Brooks’ murder occurred amidst nationwide protests against police brutality in the wake of George Floyd’s death

Food conglomerates evolve racist visual identities

  • Uncle Ben’s, Mrs. Butterworth’s, and Aunt Jemima—respectively owned by Mars, Conagra, and Quaker Oats—stated that they are removing racist symbols from their packaging to better suit consumer expectations
  • Brand representatives for Aunt Jemima say that the brand will be renamed and have the racist imagery removed from the packaging during the fourth quarter of the year
  • The recognition of harmful stereotypes in branding was recently brought to public attention by a Tiktok video titled “How To Make A Non Racist Breakfast” by American singer, KIRBY


New sanctions arise against Syrian president 

  • Continuing active sanctions since 2011, the US has imposed sanctions against economic partners with Syria’s president, Bashar al-Assad, in an attempt to halt “murderous attacks on the Syrian people” and to meet a peaceful resolution
  • The Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act arose with pushback from Syria and from China who called the sanctions “inhumane”
  • Caesar” is the codename for the Syrian military photographer who leaked over 50,000 photographs of military war crimes to the UN in 2014


That 70s Show actor charged with rape

  • Danny Masterson, the actor widely known for playing Steven Hyde in That 70s Show,  faces a penalty of up to 45 years for the rape of two women—a 23-year old and a 28-year old—in 2001 and 2003
  • Masterson, who was arrested on Wednesday, is claiming innocence and expressed confidence in his release at his arraignment, set for September 18


Questions arise over PS5 graphics’ credits

  • In Sony’s PlayStation 5 reveal last week, the graphics displayed show a striking similarity to that of an uncredited graphic artist, Maxim Zhestkov. Sony has yet to affirm or deny the connections with Zhestkov
  • Zhestkov’s works, “Computations” and “Layers,” are at least mimicked in the PS5 ads, which Zhestkov has taken credit for
