Trump says USPS chief DeJoy should lose his job if campaign finance violations are true

  • Donald Trump stated that Louis DeJoy, his appointment as US postmaster general, should be let go if the campaign finance allegations against him are true
  • DeJoy, a Trump donor and GOP fundraiser, allegedly pressured employees at his former company to donate to GOP candidates
  • Former employees claim that staff who donated to candidates that DeJoy supported would receive company bonuses in return


Jamal Khashoggi murder suspects sentenced

  • Saudi Arabia produced the final verdicts against eight suspects in the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi
  • Five of the defendants were sentenced to 20 years in prison, two others were sentenced to seven years in prison, and one of them was sentenced to ten years in prison
  • The verdicts were issued after the Khashoggi family allegedly pardoned five of the suspects in May, sparing them from the death penalty
  • UN Special Rapporteur for Extrajudicial Killings, Agnes Callamard, called the sentences a “parody of justice” after independently investigating Khashoggi’s case. Khashoggi’s fiancee called the outcome a “mockery of justice” and a “farce”


SMIC plunges 23% after potential U.S. blacklisting

  • China’s largest contract chip manufacturer, SMIC, saw its stock drop by 23% after the US government stated that it would be looking into placing export restrictions on the company
  • The US Department of Defense is analyzing whether to place SMIC on the Commerce Department’s Entity List
  • As SMIC relies on American chipmaking equipment, placing it on the Entity List would make it difficult for the company to purchase equipment needed to develop its capabilities and ultimately hurt production


Italy opens examination into Apple, Google and Dropbox’s cloud storage services

  • Italy’s competition authority is investigating cloud services run by Apple, DropBox, and Google after receiving complaints regarding unfair commercial practices
  • The Competition and Market Authority stated that it has opened six investigations into Google, Apple, and DropBox
  • Earlier this July, Italian officials raided local Apple and Amazon offices in accordance with a different competition probe

California fire burns homes in Big Creek

  • A California wildfire has burned through around two dozen homes in the small mountain town of Big Creek
  • The fire, which started on Friday in the Sierra Nevada mountains, grew to a massive 78,790-acre burn by Monday afternoon
  • A record 2 million acres have been burned in California so far this year. Scientists have claimed that this is partly due to climate change-driven intensified wildfire seasons


Novak Djokovic disqualified from U.S. Open

  • Novak Djokovic was ejected from the 2020 US Open after he hit a ball in frustration which struck a linesperson
  • Djokovic was the top-ranked seed in the tournament and a heavy favorite to win with rival Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal opting out of the tournament
