Pro-Trump mobs storm US Capitol building

  • As the House of Representatives and Senate were in the midst of certifying electoral votes to confirm President-elect Joe Biden’s win Wednesday afternoon, supporters of President Trump breached the US Capitol. As the rioters entered the House and Senate chambers, the building went into lockdown
  • Shots were reported to be fired in the Capitol and four people have subsequently died, as well as multiple officers reportedly suffering injuries. DC Mayor Muriel Bowser instituted a 6 pm curfew for Wednesday night      
  • Congress reconvened at 8pm Wednesday night to finish certifying the presidential election results


Democrats Ossoff and Warnock win tight Georgia runoff elections      

  • Early Wednesday morning, Reverand Raphael Warnock defeated incumbent Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler for one of Georgia’s US Senate seats. Warnock will become Georgia’s first African American senator 
  • On Wednesday afternoon, Jon Ossoff defeated Georgia’s other incumbent Republican Senator David Perdue for Georgia’s second US Senate seat. Ossoff will become Georgia’s first Jewish senator and, at 33 years old, the Senate’s youngest member  
  • The Georgia Senate race was hotly contested by both parties. With Ossoff and Warnock’s win, Democrats regain control of both Congress and the White House for the first time since 2011. The Senate will be split 50-50, with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris having the tie-breaking vote     


Walgreens to sell drug wholesale business for $6.5 billion

  • On Wednesday, Walgreens announced it will sell its pharmaceutical wholesale business to AmerisourceBergen in a $6.5 billion cash and stock deal
  • Walgreens said that the deal will allow them to focus more on expanding its core retail pharmacy business, which, like many other drugstore chains, was hit hard by the pandemic forcing shoppers to stay home


Netflix to be discontinued on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS

  • Nintendo announced that starting June 30, 2021, the video streaming platform Netflix will no longer be supported on Wii U and 3DS consoles. The app was already taken off the Nintendo eShop on December 31, 2020
  • Nintendo already discontinued the 3DS and is placing focus on newer platforms like the Nintendo Switch, although streaming platforms like Netflix and Hulu are still not available on the Switch


Quebec announces 4 week long lockdown to combat coronavirus

  • On Wednesday, Canada’s second-most populous province Quebec announced it will impose a tight lockdown starting Saturday, including a curfew beginning at 8 pm
  • Coronavirus cases have been steadily rising, and officials fear that without the lockdown, hospital systems will be overwhelmed


CDC finds more than 50 cases of new coronavirus variant

  • According to data posted by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are at least 52 cases in the US of the coronavirus variant that was first identified in the UK 
  • Experts suspect there could be many more cases in the US and have criticized the country for not doing more genetic sequencing of samples to surveil for mutations
