Trump’s legal team parts ways week before trial

  • Just a week before former President Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial is set to begin, his lead lawyers parted ways. The split is reportedly over a difference of opinion on an approach to the defense, occurring mutually
  • The lawyers that left the Trump team include Butch Bowers, Deborah Barbier, Greg Harris, Johnny Gasser, and Josh Howard
  • Trump is still anticipated to be acquitted, with 45 of 50 Senate Republicans voting to dismiss the trial earlier this month


Indian farmers continue protests against PM Modi

  • Indian farmers taking part in ongoing protest against new agriculture laws began a hunger strike Saturday, seeking to reaffirm the peaceful nature of their movement following recent violent clashes with police
  • “The way the government is spreading planned lies and violence is condemnable,” said a statement from the United Farmers’ Front, a coalition of farmers’ unions
  • Upwards of 10,000 farmers have camped on the edge of New Delhi since November, seeking the repeal of laws passed that favor large agribusiness and corporations, minimizing earnings of many low-income farmers


Toys ‘R’ Us closes last stores for second time

  • Having just two remaining stores in the U.S., Tru Kids Inc. closed down the remaining franchises in Texas and New Jersey, ending Toys ‘R’ Us for the second time in under three years
  • The franchise had a highly anticipated relaunch in late 2019, but the reopened stores did not meet expectations, slowly closing down one by one
  • The Toys ‘R’ Us website remains operational and over 700 stores remain open outside of the United States


University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to end use of Proctorio

  • The University announced the halting of use of the controversial proctoring service following student outcry over concern of privacy and computer safety 
  • Proctorio is one of the most prominent software platforms that universities use to flag cheating on remote tests. It uses “machine learning and advanced facial detection technologies” to record students through their webcams while they work on their exams and monitor the position of their heads
  • Similar concerns have arisen about proctoring platform HonorLock, which many universities use in addition to Proctorio, operating in largely the same manner. HonnorLock has been accused of monitoring secondary devices

Biden staffs commission of Supreme Court reform

  • Joe Biden is reportedly moving forward with the creation of a bipartisan commission to explore reforms of the Supreme Court and federal judiciary
  • Among those already on the commission, are Cristina Rodríguez, Caroline Fredrickson, and Jack Goldsmith
  • Capitol police are working in tandem with National Guard troops to secure and protect the legislative complex
  • In a White House official statement, it was said that the President will have more to say on the topic in the coming weeks


Grammy-nominated artist SOPHIE dies at 34

  • Experimental pop artist Sophie Xeon -- musically known as SOPHIE -- died following what was described as a “terrible accident” this past weekend
  • "Tragically our beautiful Sophie passed away this morning after a terrible accident. True to her spirituality she had climbed up to watch the full moon and slipped and fell,” her record label Transgressive stated
  • SOPHIE was considered a pionier of the hyperpop genre, making way for popular artists like Charli XCX and 100 Gecs
