Derek Chauvin found guilty in the murder of George Floyd

  • On Tuesday, former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in the deadly arrest of George Floyd last May. Chauvin's sentencing is scheduled to be in about eight weeks
  • The trial started on March 29, with 45 witnesses testifying. Jurors began deliberations Monday and continued to deliberate until Tuesday afternoon for a total of ten hours


President of Chad passes away

  • On Monday, authorities confirmed that Chad's President Idriss Deby died while fighting in a battle against northern rebels, one day after he was declared the winner of a presidential election
  • Deby had been president of Chad for over 30 years and an important ally to Western countries in fighting against Islamist militants in Africa. His son, Mahamat Idriss Deby, was named interim president


Venmo announces cryptocurrency buying and selling

  • On Tuesday, the mobile payment app Venmo announced that it will start allowing users on the app to buy, hold, and sell in four different cryptocurrencies– bitcoin, ether, litecoin, and bitcoin cash
  • The development extends on an initial move by PayPal– which owns Venmo– to let users trade cryptocurrency on its main platform and use cryptocurrency to pay at many of its online merchants


Democrats block resolution to censure Rep. Maxine Waters

  • On Tuesday, the House of Representatives rejected a resolution introduced by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy to censure California Rep. Maxine Waters over her comments that protestors should “get more confrontational” if Derek Chauvin was acquitted in his trial on the killing of George Floyd
  • On Monday, the judge presiding over Derek Chauvin’s trial told the court that Waters’s comments could be grounds for appealing a verdict. The defense had earlier asked for a mistrial over Waters’s comments and the recent publicity in the case


Apple announces new products and features

  • On Tuesday, Apple held its first product launch event of the year, revealing new products including a purple iPhone 12, a new iMac model and colors, a lost-item tracker called AirTag, and updated iPad Pros
  • Apple also announced a new privacy feature that will be part of the iOS 14.5 update called App Tracking Transparency, which will require apps to gain permission before gathering user or device data


12 major European soccer clubs break away to form new Super League

  • On Sunday, 12 of Europe’s biggest soccer clubs announced plans to form a new Super League that would be separate from the current Union of European Football Associations’s Champions and Europa Leagues
  • The plan is currently opposed by FIFA and UEFA, and the UEFA has threatened to ban clubs from European competition if they join the Super League
