Appeals court dismisses Gohmert lawsuit

  • A federal court on Saturday threw out an appeal from Texas Representative Louie Gohmert, in which he sought to force Vice President Mike Pence to interfere with the Electoral College vote count
  • "We need say no more, and we affirm the judgment essentially for the reasons stated by the district court. We express no view on the underlying merits or on what putative party, if any, might have standing. The motion to expedite is dismissed as moot,” the ruling stated
  • Gohmert’s case was the latest attempt by the Republican party to overturn the 2020 election results on grounds of voter fraud, despite no tangible evidence being brought to attention

United Kingdom reaches record high for COVID-19 cases

  • The U.K. recorded its five highest daily new infection numbers over the past five days, all above 50,000, and doubling the active cases from the past week
  • The National Education Union, which represents over 450,000 education workers, called on Boris Johnson to move learning online for at least two weeks in an attempt to curb transmission
  • The U.K. has struggled to contain a new strain of virus, discovered there in December, that researchers claim may be up to 70% more transmissible than COVID-19

New York surpasses 1 million COVID-19 cases

  • With a state positivity rate of 7.45% as of Saturday, New York State has surpassed one million cases of COVID-19, with 30,000 deaths since the start of the pandemic
  • The U.S. as a whole, on the first day of the new year, crossed 20 million cases of COVID-19, double that of the second most infected nation, India
  • New York City served as an early epicenter for the virus, harboring 80,000 cases in the first month, roughly 40% of the total number of cases within the U.S.

Top tech companies added 3.4 trillion dollars of value in 2020

  • The seven most valuable U.S. technology companies — Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Facebook, Tesla, and Nvidia — picked up a combined $3.4 trillion in market cap in 2020
  • Apple lead the way, adding nearly $1 trillion in market share with the release of their iPhone 12 and its variants
  • Amazon, driven by increased use during the age of the pandemic, added upwards of $700 billion this past year

Bitcoin hits highest value ever at 33k

  • Proliferating its newfound growth, Bitcoin has reached a new all-time high of $33,000 on Saturday, closing out 2020 with a nearly 300 percent growth
  • Investments of wealthy individuals are believed to be driving the price surge, with purchases of $100M by MassMutual and $25M by Skybridge Capital in December

SPORTS 🏈

Alabama and Ohio State to face off in national championship

  • Following their respective wins in the College Football Semifinals, Alabama and Ohio State will meet in the NCAA Football National Championship on Monday, January 11th
  • Alabama easily handled Notre Dame 31-14 in the Rose Bowl, with Heisman Trophy candidate Mac Jones throwing for 297 yards and 4 touchdowns
  • Ohio State managed to pull off the upset over Clemson, winning 49-28 during a game in which they were a seven point underdog
