Border clashes between China and India turn deadly

  • At least 20 Indian soldiers have died after clashing with Chinese troops along their disputed border in the Galwan Valley of the western Himalayas
  • According to a statement from the Indian military, there were casualties “on both sides,” but didn’t specify a number for Chinese casualties
  • The deaths are the first military casualties along the border in 40 years, emerging after India constructed a road along the disputed territory

PG&E CEO confesses to deaths caused by 2018 California fire

  • On Tuesday, Pacific Gas & Electric’s CEO Bill Johnson plead guilty to 84 counts of involuntary manslaughter on behalf of the company
  • The Camp fire—the November 2018 wildfire that killed 84 people across northern California and became the deadliest fire in the state—was ignited by the company’s crumbling electrical grid and led to the destruction of the town of Paradise

BUSINESS 💰

Members of Congress receive benefits from small business loan program

  • At least four members of Congress have acknowledged close ties with certain businesses that received loans from the Paycheck Protection Program – the nearly $500 billion package targeted to provide relief to small businesses amid the coronavirus pandemic
  • The businesses in question were either run by the lawmaker’s families or have congresspeoples' spouses in senior positions
  • Concerns have been raised about lawmakers’ potential conflict of interests and calls have grown for more transparency within the program, as there are currently no rules requiring that they reveal their profits from the program

TECH 📱

EU launches antitrust investigations into Apple’s App Store and Apple Pay

  • The European Union’s executive branch, the Commission, revealed Tuesday it will examine whether Apple’s rules on distribution of apps through the App Store violates EU competition rules
  • Concerns were raised over Apple allegedly forcing app developers to use the company’s in-app payment system, which charges them a 30% commission, and restricted them from telling users about alternative ways to pay for digital services and online shops

POLITICS 🏛️

Senators introduce bill to reform aircraft certification process

  • The Aircraft Safety and Certification Reform Act of 2020 calls to remove the influence of aircraft producers like Boeing from the certification process and grants new whistleblower protections to employees 
  • The bipartisan-backed bill follows the fatal crash of two Boeing planes in 2018 and 2019. The crashes led to many calls for change regarding how the Federal Aviation Administration approves airplanes

MARKET 📈

U.S. retail sales jumped a record 17.7% in May

  • American retail sales saw a sharp turnaround last month after two months of decline as the U.S. economy was affected by coronavirus-caused shutdowns 
  • The figure was more than double the increase estimated by economists. As states across the U.S. move forward with reopening, there are worries a second wave of coronavirus could cause more damage
