One officer charged with wanton endangerment in Breonna Taylor case

  • On Wednesday, a grand jury indicted former Louisville police Sgt. Brett Hankinson with 3 counts of wanton endangerment connected to the police raid that killed Breonna Taylor
  • The two other cops who were also present at the raid on Taylor’s home– Officer Myles Cosgrove and Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly– were not charged
  • An investigation revealed that bullets fired by Hankison traveled into a neighboring apartment while three residents were at home. At a press conference after the grand jury’s announcement, Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron stated that Hankison was not charged in Taylor’s death, but rather for endangering her neighbors


Belarus president abruptly sworn in

  • On Wednesday, President Alexander Lukashenko was inaugurated for his sixth term in office during an unannounced ceremony
  • Lukashenko’s inauguration follows weeks of mass protests against the authoritarian leader’s re-election, which oppositionists maintain was rigged
  • Both the United States and the European Union have criticized the violent police crackdown on post-election protests. The EU’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, released a statement last week that the bloc does not recognize Lukashenko as the legitimate president, with talks of sanctions possibly in the works


House representatives reach agreement to keep government funded until December 11

  • On Tuesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin reached a bipartisanship accord, avoiding the threat of a government shutdown at the end of the month
  • The agreement includes funding for the Commodity Credit Corporation– which provides crucial aid to farmers– and funding for food assistance programs. The Senate is expected to take up the legislation in the coming days


Google Maps adds features that show coronavirus case trends

  • Google Maps will soon include information that displays the weekly average number of coronavirus cases per 100,000 people for states, counties, and some cities. Map areas will be color-coded based on case rate and labeled if cases are going up or down
  • Google has already released a number of coronavirus-related features including reminders for facemask mandates, information about takeout options at restaurants, and warnings to call a doctor if there’s been possible transmission


TikTok requests judge to block the banning of the app

  • On Wednesday, TikTok asked a US judge to block the Trump administration order that would have required the short video-sharing app to be removed from Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store
  • Though the order was supposed to take effect this past Sunday, the Commerce Department issued a one-week delay due to “recent positive developments” in talks over the fate of its US operations


Almost 500 pilot whales discovered stranded in Australia

  • Recovery efforts began Monday when 270 pilot whales were found trapped on a beach and two sand bars near the small town of Strahan located on the coast of Tasmania, Australia
  • On Wednesday, another 200 whales were discovered in a bay about six miles from where the first pod was found. Overall, at least 380 whales have died and 50 have been rescued. The cause of the mass stranding has not yet been determined
