House passes police reform bill

  • The House of Representatives passed a police reform bill on Thursday that would curb chokeholds, ban “no-knock” warrants, and end qualified immunity, amongst other measures
  • Passing at 236-181, Democrats unanimously voted yes, alongside three Republicans
  • The legislation is not likely to get through the Senate, whose Republican majority has prepared its own police reform bill 


Iraq raids Iranian-backed militia base

  • Iraqi security forces raided a base in Baghdad belonging to the Iranian-backed militia Kataib Hezbollah 
  • Iraq’s new prime minister has indicated he will be tough on militia groups that target US installations, of which Kataib Hezbollah has been accused of doing
  • The raid followed a number of rocket attacks near the US embassy and other military sites in recent weeks


California to require zero-emission trucks 

  • Acting as the first state to pass such legislature, California adopted a landmark rule requiring all sold trucks to be zero-emission by 2045
  • California is taking these measures in order to combat e-commerce emissions throughout the state, as well as an attempt to reduce the state’s carbon footprint
  • The ruling was heavily opposed by the oil and agricultural industries, claiming that the measure is unrealistic and expensive


Verizon joins boycott of Facebook advertising

  • Verizon announced it was suspending advertisements on Facebook until the social media company addressed hate speech on its platform
  • Several other companies have taken similar action, such as Ben & Jerry’s and The North Face, in support of the Stop Hate for Profit campaign
  • Facebook said that they will respect any brand’s decision while remaining focused on the removal of hate speech

D.C. sues oil companies for climate change deception

  • Karl A. Racine, Washington D.C. attorney general, filed a lawsuit on Thursday against Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Royal Dutch Shell, and BP for misleading consumers about climate change
  • Exxon claims the lawsuit is part of a “coordinated, politically motivated” campaign against energy companies
  • The move followed similar action to that of Minnesota’s attorney general Wednesday, adding to a string of legal challenges for fossil fuel companies


Liverpool win English Premier League for the first time

  • Following Manchester City’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea FC on Thursday, Liverpool earned the English Premier League crown for the first time in the club’s history
  • “I have no words,” said Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s manager. “It’s unbelievable. Much more than I ever thought possible”
  • The club’s march toward victory was temporarily halted when the pandemic forced the UK to lockdown but resumed this month as restrictions eased
