Bipartisan support falls for President Trump amidst protests 

  • Falling approval ratings in a Gallup poll from last week reflect the attitudes of registered Democrats, Independents, and Republicans amidst pandemic and protests
  • Prior to the protests, his 2020 ratings had been some of his presidency’s highest, hovering around 49%, although his term average is at 40% 


Australian mining company to begin project in Aboriginal land

  • Anglo-Australian multinational mining company, BHP, is set to destroy a wide expanse of Aboriginal land across Australia in an ore mining endeavor. Initial land surveys revealed 40 sites of archaeological significance across the area, although indigenous people have been inhabiting the land for centuries
  • The native inhabitants, the Banjima people, have struggled to lodge objections to the sites being destroyed because of restrictive legislation, even though they have publicly stated their concerns for the project 
  • BHP chief procurement officer Sundeep Singh said of the project, “Human rights violations are the furthest anyone could possibly be from the shared value we want to generate with our partners”

Amazon declares moratorium on police use of its facial recognition technology

  • On Wednesday, Amazon declared a one-year moratorium on police usage of their racial recognition technology, Rekognition
  • It remains unknown how law enforcement agencies have used Rekognition, but in Washington County, Oregon, a police chief confirmed that their use of the technology will be suspended, confirming previous usage of the technology
  • More than 1,000 police departments across the country also have established partnerships with Ring, a doorbell company, and other security products to obtain facial recognition footage in investigations

NASCAR bans Confederate flags from all events

  • In a statement released on Wednesday, NASCAR announced that all Confederate flags will be banned from events and property 
  • NASCAR’s only full-time black driver, Bubba Wallace, wore a shirt saying “I can’t breathe/Black Lives Matter,” and urged NASCAR president Stever Phelps to make a decision regarding the flags
  • NASCAR’s statement read: "The presence of the Confederate flag at NASCAR events runs contrary to our commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fans, our competitors and our industry. Bringing people together around a love for racing and the community that it creates is what makes our fans and sport special"


Roadmap to Tokyo 2021 

  • The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games has released statements on the positioning of the games, which say that the complexity of the games will be reduced to aid efficiency
  • tentative timeline of the events has been given as well, and it looks as though organizers seek to reduce the number of participants in the upcoming games (in 2016, the Olympics featured more than 11,000 participants)
