Former NYPD Commissioner calls for investigation of Capitol siege

  • Former New York Police Department Commissioner Bill Bratton urged for the creation of a committee similar to that created following the 9/11 attacks in New York
  • “The Capital Police and other agencies that gather intelligence did a very poor job of understanding what that intelligence should have made them aware of — that there was a potential for exactly what happened,” Bratton said on Sunday
  • Representative Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) stated Friday that he is introducing a bill to establish a commission to investigate the Capitol security failures as well as any ties between white supremacists and Capitol Police


Rare blizzard hits Spain

  • In the Madrid metro region, police broke up a large snowball fight after authorities appealed for citizens to stay at home for risk of accidents or spreading coronavirus
  • As snow began to pile up, airports were shut down, train services cancelled, and upwards of 1,000 motorists were stuck in their cars
  • In the beginning hours of the snowfall, citizens were seen skiing down streets, using subway trains as ski lifts


Consumer prices rise in China amid inflation concerns

  • China’s consumer prices recently turned positive in December of 2020, reaching 0.2 per cent year-on-year after dropping 0.5 the previous month
  • Despite the nation’s speedy and quite effective recovery from the majority of the coronavirus pandemic, price growth has remained slow overall
  • Core inflation in China has fallen to 0.4 per cent year-on-year in December, the lowest recorded since the COVID-19 original outbreak


Parler removed from App Store and Google Play

  • Parler, a favorite app of Trump supporters and allegedly where the January 6th Capitol siege was planned, has been removed from both the App Store and Google Play as of Sunday
  • As well as its removal from app stores, Amazon indicated that it will cut off the website and app from its hosting servers
  • Parler, used by millions as a social media alternative, bills itself as "the world's premier free speech platform." However, the site has been found to harbor conspiracy-laden posts and calls for violence

Trump permanently suspended from Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook

  • The sitting U.S. President was permanently suspended from a multitude of social media platforms this past weekend following due to fear of further violence being incited following the riots at the Capitol
  • “After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them — specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off Twitter — we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence," Twitter stated
  • Instagram, Facebook, Twitch, Shopify, Snapchat, Tiktok, and Discord all followed suit, shutting down official Presidential accounts as well as content deemed unsafe and antagonistic


American hat-trick carries Schalke to first win in 30 games

  • 19-year-old American Matthew Hoppe played hero for FC Schalke 04 in the German Bundesliga, as his three goals against Hoffenheim led his team to victory for the first time in 30 games
  • Schalke was at risk of setting the Bundesliga record for most matches gone without a win, 34
  • Hoppe became the first American to score a hat-trick in the Bundesliga, also becoming the youngest American player to score a hat-trick in any of the five major European leagues
