US charges three North Korean hackers
- On Wednesday, the Department of Justice announced charges against three North Korean computer programmers for conducting a series of cyberattacks in an attempt to steal more than $1.3 billion in cash and cryptocurrency, affecting companies from banks to Hollywood studios
- The DOJ also stated the hackers were responsible for the infamous 2014 attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment for producing “The Interview,” a movie that depicted the assassination of North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un. The trio also participated in creating the WannaCry 2.0 ransomware, which hit Britain’s National Health Service

Protests ensue after rapper arrested in Spain
- On Tuesday night, rapper Pablo Hasel was arrested after the deadline to turn himself in (for a conviction in a free speech case) expired. Hasel, whose real name is Pablo Rivadulla Duro, was charged for supporting terrorism and for slander against the Spanish monarchy through tweets he published from 2014 to 2016, and was sentenced to nine months in jail
- Following his arrest, protests and clashes with police erupted in several Spanish cities in support of Duro and demanding changes to Spain’s Public Security Law, which has been criticized for allegedly being used to restrain free assembly and protests

- Japanese Olympics Minister Seiko Hashimoto is set to become the new head of Tokyo 2020, the organizing committee for the Summer Olympic games that are set to occur this summer after being delayed by a year due to the coronavirus pandemic
