Duha's Success Story!

Duha, a widowed mother of two, arrived in Seattle last year carrying years of personal and emotional hardship. Originally from Iraq, she and her family had relocated to Jordan in 2017 to escape the unstability at home. There, she did her best to create a life for her children, despite the uncertainty that defined their future.

In 2021, while living in Jordan, Duha faced an unimaginable loss, her husband passed away from cancer, leaving her to care for their children, then just 5 and 9 years old, entirely on her own. The grief was heavy and the responsibility daunting. Yet despite this incredible loss, Duha remained focused on giving her children hope and security.

That heartfelt hope became reality last year, when her immigration application was finally accepted and she resettled in the U.S.A. with her children. Soon after arriving in Seattle, Duha found part-time work, earning just $1,220 a month. With initial help from a resettlement agency, she managed to pay rent and begin adjusting to life in a new country. But when that support ended, things became difficult. Her monthly rent alone was almost $1500, already more than her income, leaving her with little to cover for basic essentials and the needs of her children.

Despite her efforts to find full-time employment, she faced several rejections. The strain of financial instability began to mount and she eventually fell behind on her rental payments, accumulating a large amount in arrears.

Duha discovered and sought assitance from Muslim Housing Services (MHS), after learning about us from her friends and neighbours. Her Case Manager at MHS, worked closely with her to understand her circumstances and facilitate her application for MHS’s Homelessness Prevention Program, funded by the City of Seattle. Through this program, MHS was able to cover her rental arrears, enabling her to resolve the outstanding balance with her landlord and avoid the risk of eviction. She was approved for four months of rental assistance, giving her the time and stability she needed to begin rebuilding. To further support her journey toward self- sufficiency, her Case Manager also connected her with employment services to help her search and apply for jobs.

Empowered by this support, Duha refocused her efforts and continued her job search. Her unwavering determination eventually yielded success when she secured a full-time position as an assistant at a children’s day care centre.

Today, Duha enjoys a more stable life and a renewed sense of security. Her children have also begun to thrive, settling into their new environment with the support of friends and neighbours. She has regained the ability to cover her family’s living expenses and is now planning for the future with confidence.

“I will never forget the support I received from MHS,” she shared. “It helped me stand on my feet again.”

Like Duha, many who walk through our doors remind us that behind every housing application is a person striving to rebuild, heal and begin again.

Supporting Foster Care in the Muslim Community

Muslim Housing Services (MHS) recently met with representatives from the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) and the Muslim Community Resource Center (MCRC), part of Muslim Association of Puget Sound (MAPS), to address a critical issue facing our community: the shortage of Muslim foster families and the urgent need to support with more members stepping forward to care for vulnerable children.

An Urgent Need
Across the United States, approximately 343,000 children were in foster care as of Sept, 2023, according to the most recent AFCARS Report #31. Numerous community organizations and advocates confirm that thousands of Muslim children are currently in the U.S. foster care system, although precise national figures for Muslim children under foster care are unavailable, since religious affiliation is not tracked in federal foster care reporting.

Due to the shortage of licensed Muslim foster families, many of these children are placed in non-Muslim households, raising concerns about cultural and religious continuity. This gap can have lasting consequences. Placement in culturally and religiously unfamiliar environments may lead to a loss of religious identity, emotional or psychological challenges and feelings of isolation and disconnection.

Barriers and Misconceptions
During the meeting, common barriers that deter families from pursuing foster parenting were discussed, including:
  • Misunderstandings about Islamic teachings related to foster care and guardianship
  • Limited awareness of the foster care licensing process
  • Concerns about privacy, bureaucracy and navigating a complex system
Despite these challenges, Islamic principles emphasize the importance of caring for orphans and vulnerable children through ‘kafāla’, a form of guardianship that preserves the child’s identity and dignity.

A Shared Commitment
MHS, ICNA and MCRC, expressed a strong commitment to raising awareness and building support for Muslim foster families. Some proposed next steps include:
  • Hosting educational workshops and community forums
  • Encouraging faith leaders to speak about foster care in sermons and gatherings
  • Creating support networks for current and prospective foster parents
While MHS continues to focus on its core mission as a nonprofit housing provider, we are honored to support these community-led efforts that align with our broader goals of family stability and well-being.

Diaper Bank

Muslim Housing Services are reaching out to the community with a Diaper Donation Appeal to help babies and toddlers of families experiencing material hardship. These families are unable to afford this essential necessity for their young.

Did you know, families are unable to use their food stamps to purchase diapers? Additionally, undocumented families do not receive food stamps or cash assistance from the government?

Babies without access to diapers face potential health risks, require more frequent trips to the doctor, and are more likely to be unaccepted into daycare centers, making it challenging for parents to go to work.

Please consider helping a child today and lets make all babies happy by clicking on the following link: Diapers

Thank you for your support. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these young ones.

Stock Donations

Muslim Housing Services accepts Stock Donations in-kind. Tax donations are one of the most effective ways of supporting charities, and has tax incentives. These include avoiding Capital Gains Tax on stock donations because MHS is a 501(c)3 charity. "By donating stock that has appreciated for more than a year, you are actually giving up to 20 percent more than if you sold the stock and then made a cash donation."

A Reminder

MHS is a 501(c)3 charity and our work would not be possible without the generous donations of community members like you. Please consider donating to help keep the roof over someone's head.

"Those who spend their wealth in charity day and night, secretly and openly—their reward is with their Lord, and there will be no fear for them, nor will they grieve." [Qur'an 2:274]
