A Menno Minute

“Let's get JAZZED!

By Brenda Tiessen-Wiens

Our Finance Committee, in the "Y" MCA column for May 20, notes that giving to operational expenses doesn’t have the same pizzazz as giving to other more visual and tangible ministries such as post-secondary bursaries that support students, camp and children’s ministries that bring smiles to everyone’s faces and grow roots for the future church, or women’s retreat, where engaging in personal growth together creates spiritual connections. Ministries like these easily flow into story-telling opportunities and create great photo ops. They’re wonderful things to support! Giving to “where needed,” on the other hand, is not as exciting. So to give it a boost, let’s jazz it up!

J –  is for Jesus (of course!) who said “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
A – is for our attentive Finance Committee
Z – is for the zippy way that Tany replies to emails and reimburses expenses
Z – is for our zesty staff and the passion they bring to their work
E -  is for essential; the underlying structure is what makes all our other ministries possible
D – is for donors, the people of MCA who make up our churches, share their visions and create a community of congregations that grows together as God’s people.

The next time you make a donation to your congregation, to MCA, or to one of our partner organizations, remember that "where needed" is a jazzed way of giving!

Finance Committee

Issue #4

Finance is a somewhat unique committee within MCA in that we have touch points with every MCA ministry, congregation, donor, partner, and constituent. You may have heard from one of us:

  • Jim Moyer contacting your congregation to inquire about your annual budget or to thank you for your donation.
  • Tany Warkentin reimbursing an expense, seeking approval to pay a bill, or sending you a donation receipt.
  • Wayne Janz providing a financial update or presenting the annual budget for approval.

Keeping an accurate account of MCA finances for all our stakeholders, paying the bills, compensating staff, and issuing donation receipts may not sound glamorous, but we find joy in supporting others as they lead MCA programs and ministries. The numbers we track are a reflection of all the volunteers, staff, and donors who are passionate about being Christ’s church together. And that is what energizes us with every thank you we send, every cheque we write, or every spreadsheet we present.

The one ask we have of all MCA supporters is to keep in mind that like any organization, we have operational costs that need to be covered every year. Office rent, insurance premiums, and web site fees may not have the pizzazz of an outreach ministry, growing church leadership skills in young adults, or a flourishing camp program, however, covering these operational costs are essential to keeping the pizzazz going. Please continue to generously support our ministries as well as our ongoing operations through the means our Lord provides.

Tany, Jim, and Wayne

Mennonite Church Canada Study conference goes virtual on October 24, 2020

Table Talk: Does the church still have legs?

During this global COVID-19 pandemic, the Holy Spirit calls us to re-examine what it means to be the church. While technology allows us to join each other on Sunday mornings, without gathering together how can we be Christ’s Body? What does this crisis reveal about our current practices of being the church? Join our nationwide community of faith as we gather virtually for a time of discernment on the nature and identity of the church and the role of worship. Sara Wenger Shenk, former president of Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary, and several other scholars from our Mennonite schools will reflect on themes related to 1 Peter 2:9-10. Mark your calendars!
