President's Message

I would like to take the opportunity to thank our members and business community who have given me a very warm welcome and support on my recent appointment as President for BPS.  I am looking forward to serving the members of BPS and expanding our services further afield in the Port Stephens LGA.  

We are experiencing challenges we are not unfamiliar with and encourage everyone to continue working together as a business community, support local and reach out if you need help or support.

If you are an employer, The Work Health and Safety Act 2011 still applies if your employees are working from home?  Employers and employees need to work together and keep informed of their responsibilities.

Meet our new Administrator

Not only do we have a new President at the helm but we have a new Administrator at the rudder - Kerri Rodley.  Kerri's background is in marketing/communications and she has worked in the agricultural, tourism, animal welfare and wellbeing industries. Says Kerri: I absolutely love being a part of the Port Stephens community and I look forward to taking care of all of our valued members and board.

Call out for old computers

Do you have an old computer gathering dust in your cupboard?

Youth Express is putting an urgent call out for computers for disadvantaged students to use during lockdown to continue their studies.

If you have a laptop or desktop computer in good working order please consider donating it to this worthy cause.

Port Stephens Council are in the process of updating their Economic Development Strategy – a Strategy that will provide a blueprint for enhancing the vibrancy and sustainability of our local economy. The (draft) Strategy sets out five focus areas for Council to prioritise over the next two years:

1. Investment attraction and promotion
2. Sustainability and resilience
3. Workforce for the future
4. Business growth
5. Support local

Five way to improve your home office 

Face it - working from home is the "new norm" for many of us so why not make it a more pleasant experience. These five simple tweaks will make a huge difference to your working day:
  1. Seating - have a chair that is comfortable for you (i.e. not one of your dining chairs), that encourages you to sit up straight and support your back. Dining chairs are made to sit and eat a meal for an hour, not to sit on all day. 
  2. Monitor- by attaching an external monitor to your laptop, you won't be squinting at your little keyboard screen. Raise it up so your head is not looking down.
  3. Keyboard - get an external keyboard and make sure it is a good size for your hands - not the tiny laptop one that gives you RSI. Make the keyboard and the mouse wireless. 
  4. Clutter - keep paperwork out of the work space and have a filing system like you would have at the office. A clear space creates clear thinking. Organise cables if you have any. 
  5. Lighting - if possible sit by a window or get a good lamp to illuminate your workspace (and your face for those flattering Zoom calls). 
Bonus tips -
* Make sure you get up every half hour and stretch
* Keep your water bottle nearby and take swigs regularly
* Have some relaxing music in the background
* Scent the air with an oil diffuser or candle (much better than Rob's leftover fish curry wafting through the office!)
