President's Message

Welcome to a brand new year!

2022 brings with it a new optimism, new opportunity, a different attitude and appreciation and a very busy schedule for Business Port Stephens.

It gives me great pleasure to introduce you to our newest board member Kim Burbridge owner of Burbridge & Burke, Magnus Street, Nelson Bay.  Kim brings with her a wealth of knowledge in the retail industry, with great connections in the artisan sector. Kim has a passion for all things local and is a great supporter and advocate in the Nelson Bay CBD community.

Forward planning for BPS is underway with a full planning meeting scheduled for late January 2022. We will bring everyone up to date with the outcomes in February.

My guest on the couch this month, Fiona Brown. Looking at Fiona's profile, I didn't know where to start! I could have asked questions on any topic and Fiona would have covered it.

I am looking forward to getting out and about when the holiday dust settles and having a chat to you all.  But in the meantime please do not hesitate to reach out if there is anything we can help or support you with.

Wishing you all the very best for 2022.
Mel Turner

Fiona Brown, YOUtopia WELLbeing

Tell us about your business.
My business, YOUtopia WELLbeing, fits into the personal development space.  The core of my business is personal leadership development and NLP coaching, public speaking coaching, Hypnotherapy and Matrix Therapies.  I work with individuals and groups, both in person at my space in Boat Harbour as well as online.  My business began in Mudgee 15 years ago and ran alongside my 35 year nursing career until I let go of nursing completely in 2020 to focus solely on my personal development work.  I also contract to and collaborate with others to deliver programs such as a Women In Leadership development program for the Hunter/Central Coast.
What strategies do you use to try and keep a work/life balance?
I walk my talk.  I wouldn’t be good at what I do without having that balance.  It’s very important for me to live and lead by example.  I go for walks on the beach and fishing with my hubby, schedule in quality time with friends, garden (as best as I can in sand), roller skate, meditate, and read a lot.

What do you love about being part of the business community in Port Stephens?
I see our business community as progressive, resilient and proactively wanting to help each other out, and that really resonates with me.  I enjoy being a part of five different networking groups and am President of Port Stephens Women in Business.  Each group is very different, but all have helped me in terms of a greater sense of connection, support and referrals.

Port Stephens favs
Eat - Sanook Thai
Go out - Murrays
Relax - Picnic by the foreshore

Why did you choose to become a member of BPS?
That’s a ‘no brainer’.  We are the average of our environment.  If we want to be great at anything, we need to spend time with others who are great.  That’s what I’m doing.

10 Tips To Start The New Year Off Right

1.   Set specific goals but ensure they are measurable too.

4.   Keep track of your success and reward yourself as you go.
5.   Talk about your goals to friends and family so that they can support you.
6.   Goals are not carved in stone - adjust them as you go.
7.   If things aren’t going according to plan, ask for help. People love being asked.
8.   Avoid doing things the same way when you didn’t get the results: try a new approach.
