Go for Gold, Silver and Bronze!

Detail of a Meiji period silvered bronze eagle with gold and shakudo details, Japanese, c1880.

As the Winter Olympics has drawn to a close GB has achieved its best medal haul ever.  However if it is bronze, silver and gold you are after then look no further than the Wick Antiques website!

Two from a set of four wall lights
by Rode of Paris, c1890  £16,500
A Napoleon III display table,
French, c1870. £4,450
A Victorian painted and gilt Adam
style console table, c1890. £7,850.

On the podium in the gold position we have four fine French gilt wall lights with shells and female masks signed ‘Rode à Paris’.  In the middle is another French piece from the mid-19th century.  This is a display table with a glazed upper section above a stretcher decorated with kingwood and satinwood sunburst veneer.  The gold element is supplied by the ormolu mounts. On the right is an English console table in the Adam style which similarly combines decorative woods with gilt detailing, but in this instance the gilding is juxtaposed on a painted white ground.

A silver plated table by Franchi, c1870. £22,500 A Meiji period cloisonné vase, Japanese,
c 1890.  £2,500.
A silver model of the Ramghandram
Hostel, India.  c1930.  £7,500

In the silver category we have a mid-Victorian silver-plated table attributed to Giovanni Franchi & Son, Clerkenwell, reminiscent of the solid silver dressing tables and mirrors made for Stuart royalty.  In the centre is an ornate Meiji period cloisonné vase with silver wire work in the ho-ho birds and dragons and assay stamps on the silver mounts.  Lastly is an extraordinary model of an Art deco building on a Bakelite plinth which is illuminated from within.  It was made by Messrs. Vummidi Ramiah Chetty and Co, jewellers to the wealthy citizens of Bombay and Madras.
A pair of Venetian cannon bearing
the lion of St Mark. Circa 1720,  £85,000
A mantel clock by Blanpain, Paris
circa 1890.  £4,800
A Meiji perod bronze fisherman, by Jonan,
circa 1890.  £7,850

We have so many bronzes that competition in this class was fierce!  Charlie chose a rare pair of Venetian cannon from Clanezzo, near Bergamo and this unusual four glass mantel clock with profuse ormolu decoration mounted on bronze and inset with mahogany panels, signed Blanpain, Paris.  I chose the large fisherman by Jonan because the whole composition is so dynamic – you can imagine the power of the current as it half-submerges the creel and swirls round the rocks, while the fisherman is fighting hard to drag his catch into the net.
