Space Invaders

An extensive burled and figured pollard oak dining table by Gillows

Space!  What a boon our new warehouse has proved to be already.  We unloaded our most recent container from overseas in half an hour, as we could trundle the forklift right into the huge central floorspace.  Then we unwrapped at leisure in the dry – no more worries about keeping raindrops off polished wood surfaces or absorbent upholstery.  The best moment, however, came on photography day.  Finally, we are able to photograph pieces which have been too big to capture before.  First up was a 25ft 6in table with 11 leaves and 24 chairs from Stokesey Hall!  It took all morning just to set up, but with the ground floor and mezzanine combined our photographer has managed to convey its size.

Next came a monumental George IV plum pudding mahogany side cabinet which is a couple of inches over 11 feet long.

Then a new arrival – a magnificent bureau plat with a racy history.  It is a faithful copy of the desk made by Jacques Dubois, on which Benjamin Franklin signed the Treaty of Alliance with France at the Hotel de Crillon in Paris 1778.  Then it passed to the collection of Phyllis McGuire, lead singer in the vocal group The McGuire Sisters who enjoyed huge popularity around the world in the 1950s and 60s.  A friend of the Rat Pack- including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr, Mrs McGuire was also infamously the girlfriend of mobster Sam Giancana who ran the “Chicago Outfit” from 1957-1966.  Read the full story in our blog here.

A large Napoleon III ebonized partners’ desk by Racault.  French, circa 1860.

Giant English four glass table regulator with World Time dial and Perpetual Calendar by Lund & Blockley

This giant table regulator with seven time zones on the dial and a perpetual calendar by Lund & Blockley towers above a conventional carriage clock.

At just under 8ft feet 6in tall, this exceptional quality kingwood and tulipwood secretaire bookcase requires a fairly high ceiling to accommodate it.

Lastly, this Italian walnut scale model of a clipper needs its own display table, rather than sitting on a desk top, as it is 6 feet long.

We have recently purchased an extremely fine and interesting late 19th century French bureau plat or writing table/desk that is exciting on many different levels. Firstly, the piece reproduces a table which was used in 1778 when Benajmin Franklin signed the Treaty of Alliance with France in Paris. This table was made by the celebrated master ebeniste Jacques Dubois and is regarded as a masterpiece of French furniture design.
