Easter in the Mediterranean

‘Valetta Harbour’, by Montague J Dawson (1895-1973), oil on board, signed.   £12,800

We were invited to visit Malta at the end of the Easter holidays.  The Wallrocks have some connections with Malta; Charlie’s nephew is married to a Maltese lady, his cousin has just over-wintered a classic motor yacht there, and, most importantly, his father, Lt. Cmdr. Michael Wallrock R.N.R. served on the Malta Convoys during the Second World War. So it was interesting to see the Grand Harbour, full of massive but restored battlements, houses, modern yachts and enormous cruise liners today, and trying to imagine it as it was during his months there.

Coincidentally Charlie has just purchased a striking grisaille oil painting by Montague Dawson, one of his favourite artists. Not only does it portray Valletta harbour but it also shows a British Hunt Class Type II Destroyer – Michael Wallrock served on her sister ship HMS Eridge.  So it seems that the focus of this newsletter is to be the Mediterranean.

Below we have a rare WWII Italian prisoner-of-war model of Italian heavy cruiser 'Zara'. Launched in 1931, the Zara saw action in the Spanish Civil War and WWII, notably against the British battleships Barham, Valiant and Warspite. Next there is an ornate table which combines specimen marbles with micro mosaic scenes of Rome and on the right a pair of Italian commodes signed by Zignago & Picasso (only one shown).

A model of the Italian battleship ‘Zara’ Signed
and dated 1945. English/Italian   £1,975
A Neoclassical pietra dura, micro mosaic and walnut
centre table, Italian, c1870. £28,500.
One of a pair of bird‘s eye maple commodes,
by Zignago & Picasso, Italian, c1880 £,14,500

A pair of  kingwood bedside/lamp tables,  French, circa 1910. £5,250  A Napoleon III inkwell by Maison Giroux,  Paris.  circa 1860. £2,800 A linden wood ‘Black Forest’ wild boar, Swiss, circa 1890. £3,850

Above there is a pair of French lamp tables (or bedside tables) with marquetry decoration and a gilt, bone and wood inkwell by Giroux of Paris with rams' head handles. Finally I have included a totally realistic snarling wild boar because boar populations are increasing round the northern shores of the Mediterranean – and also because he is a superb example of Black Forest wood carving.

Charlie is currently packing a container in Palm Beach, as we are pulling out of the art and design centre there, but he will be back in London next week at Wallrock and Brooker, so do telephone him for a meeting on 07768 877069.
