New Stock for a New Year

Thomas Willis, ‘Eudora’ of New York, 1900, oil and silk/velvet collage on canvas  £6,400

2019 is off to a flying start with a photoshoot of brand new ‘treasures’ to be posted on our website.  Here is a preview of the most unusual ones.  Above is a ship’s portrait, with a twist, by Thomas Willis of New York.  His unique images were created with velvet hulls and silk sails, thus giving each ship a vivid extra dimension.

A Victorian wine cooler attr.Gillows. English, c1860.   £14,500 One of a pair of Georgian wine coolers supplied to Sir Lawrence Dundas, c1764. A mahogany wine cooler by S. Norman for Hornby Castle, c 1765

Next we have a fine Victorian mahogany wine cooler with many design elements inspired by a group of George III ormolu-mounted examples by Samuel Norman of Soho (1718 - 1779). One of these was made for Robert, 4th Earl of Holderness for Hornby Castle, Yorkshire, while a pair were supplied to Sir Lawrence Dundas (Lit: A. Coleridge, ‘Sir Lawrence Dundas and Chippendale’, Apollo, September 1967, p. 165, fig. 8) and later sold by the Marquess of Zetland at Christie’s.   As the originals would command a six figure sum, in the present market, the Victorian version is considerably more affordable!

A display table attr. Holland and Sons. English, c1860.  £12,500 A large Meiji period vase on stand.
Japanese, c1880.   £22,500
A late Regency cylindrical open
Bookcase. English, c1820.  £6,800

In this row there are three drawing room pieces. On the left is a rare and superb quality walnut mirrored hexagonal display table with solid walnut turned and gilded columns at each corner.  In the middle is a large (32 inches high) Meiji period bronze bowl and stand decorated with carp in a swirling stream and on the right a bird’s eye maple free standing cylindrical bookcase.

A brass and teak model of a field
cannon, c1930 £2,200
An Anglo Indian ebony desk set,
Circa 1840   £2,650
A large mahogany humidor, c1900.
H 38 in.   £2,200

Lastly Charlie has chosen three gentleman’s library items as there is a whole section of our website devoted to this collection.  Two pieces are brass bound. The brass field cannon is on a teak carriage and comes complete with a miniature bucket, swabs and ramrods.  The humidor by J Walker Anderson of 7 Lowndes Square, London, is mahogany with a later Spanish cedar lining, Adorini humidifier and two trays for cigars.  In the middle, as a contrast, is an ornately carved Indian ebony pen tray with three covered inkwells, a single drawer and a pocket watch holder.

Wallrock and Brooker has closed in Chelsea as the lease ran out with the old year.  Meanwhile we are looking forward to a spectacular and exciting stand at Masterpiece devoted entirely to Admiral Lord Nelson and his naval colleagues and successors. The collection will be researched, catalogued and curated by the author Martyn Downer.  It promises a large range of interesting pieces from silver salvers to dessert services for the table, mirrors and paintings for the walls and gold jewellery and swords which would have been worn about the person.

Please do call Charlie on 07768 877069 to discuss a valuation, to ask advice on starting a collection or
for any other sort of appointment.
