Christmas 2017

The Lymington  Showroom

As I write this Charlie and Ed are flying to Palm Beach for a new pre-Christmas event hosted by the Palm Beach Show Group in the Design Centre where we have a large stand in pole position just inside the front doors.  As Edward does more and more travelling with Charlie, he is inevitably beginning to develop his own style and even buys the odd piece so I have promised to promote his three latest purchases as possible Christmas presents.

A bronze borzoi by W Gebler,
Dresden,
c1880, H 9 ¾ “. £1,650
An unusual anchor barometer byJohn Gray, Liverpool, c1850. H 43”  £8,800 A cow hide reclining chair on a tubular steel and black metal frame,  c1990.   £675

Firstly he spotted a bronze borzoi by W Gebler which Charlie obviously sanctioned as we find models of animals are always good sellers.  Then he pipped Charlie to the post in spotting a large (43in) barometer in the form of an anchor and twist of rope by John Gray, 25 & 26 Strand Street, Liverpool.  Charlie is less likely, however, to have bought Ed’s reclining chair.  Inspired by the Modernist Movement of the 1920s and 30s, the original of this chair was designed by le Corbusier in 1928 for the Ville d' Avray, a commune in the western suburbs of Paris, and exhibited at the Salon d' Automne in 1929.  Known as ‘The Gravity Chaise Longue’ it is chic and decorative so may well appeal to the ‘millennial’ generation.

A superb solid copper and brass T-class submarine on a bakelite base, c1938,
L 21”.  H5 ½ “  £4,800
A copper weathervane, English,
c 1920.  H 34”                   £950
A polished hardwood coffee table on a modern base.   W40 D30in       £3,250

Charlie’s ideas for Christmas presents have, as ever, a nautical flavour and are nothing if not original – below is an engineer’s model of a T-class submarine in solid brass and copper next to a copper weather vane in the form of a gaff rigged sailing boat.  The submarine has moveable fore and aft planes, air tanks, a conning tower with snorkel, a periscope, quick firing gun, a twin prop-shaft with propellers and a rudder.  As you know from previous newsletters, I love dramatic colours and patterns in wood, so my choice is a coffee table cut across the burr of a huge old hardwood tree, probably amboyna, with a wonderful ‘plum pudding’ centre and rich golden border set on a modern base.

Once the travelers return we will be a few days away from Christmas so this is the moment to wish you all a merry Christmas and prosperous New Year.
