New Stock – from Davenport to Foudroyant

A set of twelve mahogany dining chairs attributed to Gillow of Lancaster and London, c1820.  £22,500

Charlie has been busy buying stock here and in the United States.  Above we have a long set of dining chairs, comprising ten side chairs and two carvers.  These can be attributed to Gillows by comparing them to page 255, plate B28 in Volume II of Susan Stuart’s comprehensive and invaluable study of Gillows of London (Antique Collectors’ Club, Woodbridge, 2008).

A Gillows pollard oak walnut Davenport,
with slides and pen tray, c1820. £3,850

Likewise we rely on the Gillows archive for the history of a very particular type of desk – the Davenport.  The annotated drawing, above, was designed for Gillows of Lancaster by Ferguson & Co, in response to a request from a Captain Davenport.  Although there is no evidence that the Captain campaigned with his desk, he clearly needed a compact item of furniture with maximum storage potential.  The basic principle of the Davenport desk was to have the writing slope on a different side from the drawers and incorporate a hinged, leathered writing slope enclosing pigeon holes and small drawers.  The more elaborate desks have extra books slides, pen trays, secret compartments and even a whole bank of drawers or letter racks which rise up behind the slope at the release of a hidden catch.

A superb circular table attr. to
Edward Holmes Baldock,  c1840. £12,500
A Jennens and Bettridge lacquer box,
with a silver medallion by Pinches,
c1850   £2,200
A walnut folio stand, English,
c1870. £4,400

Davenports were obviously designed to fit into a corner and save space when not in use.  The same can be said of tilt top tables.  Although the table above would comfortably seat 6 for breakfast or dinner its tripod base and hinged top meant it could easily be cleared from the centre of the room for parties or dancing – with the added opportunity to admire the garlands of English flowers (a typical feature of Edward Holmes Baldock’s marquetry) inlaid into the superb quarter veneers.  Likewise the walnut folio stand opens to a total width of 43 ½" but is only 24 inches wide when folded away.

A pair of demi-lune console tables, attr to Edwards and Roberts, c1890   £5, 850   A gilt brass pentagonal hall lantern French, c1870,   £2,850 An armchair made from the copper and oak of HMS Foudroyant, c1897. (on reserve)

While we have another pair of tables with an attribution, (Edwards and Robert, above left) two further items are clearly identifiable.  The black lacquer box with gilt and painted decoration is stamped ‘Jennens & Bettridge’ underneath and the silver medallion of Athena set into the top is embossed ‘Pinches’.  Both of these companies were highly respected in their fields with Jennens & Bettridge winning a gold medal in 1851 and the Royal Warrant of Prince Albert.  Meanwhile the oak armchair has an applied brass plaque stating it was “Manufactured from the Oak and Copper salved from Nelson’s ‘Foudroyant’, Goodall, Lamb and Heighway Ltd, Manchester”.
