One notable deadline: Venture Atlanta, the leading venture capital conference in the Southeast, is currently accepting applications from companies who want to pitch to top investors at their event in October. July 12 - July 23

New Orleans, LA - Participants of StartupBus are headed from as far as Mexico City, New York and Silicon Valley to New Orleans this week. The StartupBus Entrepreneurs Summit will take place in New Orleans July 27-28 and feature two days of keynotes, talks, and demos. Next month, the Aspen Institute Socrates Program will be returning to New Orleans for the 2nd year; the focus of the two-day conference (August 27-28) will be on “Urban Opportunity, Access & Inclusion”. Levelset CEO Scott Wolfe was recently named one of the top CEOs for women workers. Wolfe was the only New Orleans-based CEO to make the list that totaled 100 company leaders. 365 Connect, which provides technology for the multifamily housing industry, recently announced a platform-wide ADA Accessibility Certification. LSU Health New Orleans was recently awarded nearly $200K for technologies invented by their faculty that will soon be moving into the commercial space.

Atlanta, GA - The new Techstars Atlanta 2019 cohort was recently announced and it features primarily Southern startups, including Bundl (Santa Rosa Beach, FL), Coworks (Raleigh, NC), Eletype (Atlanta, GA), MaxRewards (Atlanta, GA), RentCheck (New Orleans, LA), StreetMetrics (Birmingham, AL), and Talented (Durham, NC). A group of social impact-focused Atlanta organizations have received a $100K grant from the new Kapor Center Tech Done Right challenge. The grant will be used to launch the Intentionally Good project, an initiative that aims to help up to 50 startups over the next year. The Georgia Institute of Technology and Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) recently announced a new initiative that will support MSM’s commercialization efforts to create health technology startups, while one of the fastest-growing healthtech companies in the country, Edifecs from Washington state, announced their plans for a new East Coast headquarters in Atlanta, planning to hire up to 200 new employees over the next three to five years.

Austin, TX - Austin accelerator DivInc recently revealed the 13 diverse startups that will make up its Fall 2019 cohort. The cohort includes 7 women founders, with companies innovating in the fields of cannabis, medtech, AI, and more. New reports show that salaries for tech workers grew faster in Austin than any other major city in the U.S., rising 15 percent in a three-year period, and that Austin ranks #6 in North America for its tech talent labor pool. Singapore-based data security software company Ground Labs recently picked Austin for its North American headquarters, while Austin marketing agency Bulldog Solutions is being acquired by San Francisco-based Hero Digital, a branding and marketing company.

Birmingham, AL - Four local startups founded by people of color - Mixtroz, Fledging, Employee Cycle, and Babypalooza - will be receiving investments from Bronze Valley’s pre-seed capital fund. A new interactive website called Bham BizHub aims to share startup resources and boost entrepreneurship, while Opportunity Zones could also benefit Birmingham’s startup scene. The Frontier recently announced that their industrial innovation conference previously scheduled for August 2019 will be postponed to April 1-3, 2020. The event will take place at the Lyric Theatre in Birmingham, Alabama. The decision to postpone the event was made in order to allow for a longer runway for the community, speakers, and sponsors in the Gulf region to participate. 

Dallas, TX - Dallas-based founder Tiffany Ricks and her team at Hacware have been chosen as one of ten startups to participate in Techstars NYC. Ricks calls her product “one of the first autonomous White Hat Hacking applications.” Robin Autopilot, a Dallas-based robotic lawn mower subscription service startup, was recently acquired by Ohio-based Fahey Group, which plans to move the company’s headquarters near Cleveland.

Miami, FL - Miami-based startup EcoSystems is taking on the largest-ever water conservation retrofit project, which will reportedly save close to 176 million gallons of water and $1.2 million annually. Ironhack is aiming to increase accessibility and affordability of web development and UX/UI design bootcamp education via their new Income Share Agreement (ISA) program

Nashville, TN - The 9 finalists for the LaunchTN Pitch Competition have been announced: C4 Solutions, CPRWrap Inc., DOTReady, Healing Innovations, Idyl Cloud, Nth Cycle, Possip, SecondKeys, and StoragePug will pitch for the opportunity to win $50K, plus a $10K crowd favorite award. The pitch competition will take place August 29 as part of 36|86 Entrepreneurship Festival. A recent report shows that Nashville startups lead the state of Tennessee in venture capital, with 35 Nashville companies raising a total of $733 million last year, breaking the previous annual record by nearly double.

Raleigh, NC - A new insurtech-focused accelerator program is kicking off in the Raleigh-Durham area, featuring startups from around the world, including London, Barcelona, NYC, San Francisco, Boston, Atlanta, and Durham. The Techstars MetLife Digital Accelerator announced its new cohort, which features startups who are solving problems related to mental health, smoking cessation, cancer detection, dental, claims processing, and more. Meanwhile in Charlotte, AvidXchange will be breaking ground later this year on its second headquarters building and they recently shared renderings of this new $41 million expansion.

Tampa, FL - At the recent Tampa Bay Wave TechDiversity cohort pitch event, a new partnership was announced between Tampa Bay Wave and Think Big for Kids which will help promote awareness of entrepreneurship and job opportunities in the technology field for underprivileged youth. The partnership will include a 10-week social media campaign designed to promote awareness, mentorship opportunities and a $500K fundraising campaign in support of Think Big for Kids’ goal to prepare 2,000 teens for the workforce by 2022. At the recent Synapse Summit, a new $40K innovation challenge, in partnership with GuideWell Innovation, was announced with the goal of ending food insecurity. Synapse Summit also announced their 2020 dates (February 11-12) and a new focus for next year.
