Southern Startup News:
January 3 - January 23

New Orleans, LA - The new year kicked off with a new initiative to map out the local startup ecosystem: the Greater New Orleans Startup Index is gathering data about the city’s startups now through February 15. Silicon Bayou announced their list of the top 100 most influential people in Louisiana’s startup scene, and Propeller opened applications for their PitchNOLA challenge, inviting food, water, health, and education entrepreneurs to compete for a total $35,000 in prizes. Local non-profit STEM NOLA was recently awarded a one-year, $140,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation for their technology education programs.

Atlanta, GA - As you’ll see below in our Recent Rounds, Atlanta companies are knocking it out of the park, with a $400 million round for home trade-in platform Knock and $182.5 million for bitcoin futures platform Bakkt. A California biotech company, BioIQ, has moved its headquarters to the Atlanta area, bringing more than 500 tech jobs with it. NRD Capital, a private equity firm headquartered in Atlanta, has established NRD Tech Ventures, which will focus on investing in early to mid-stage technology companies serving the restaurant, hospitality, franchise, and healthcare industries.

Austin, TX - This week brought a major acquisition, as ATX-based PR software and analytics company TrendKite announced it is being acquired by Chicago-based Cision for $225 million. Private equity firm Tritium Partners closed a $465 million second fund, while South African tech company RapidDeploy has moved their headquarters to Austin. Accelerator and co-working space Capital Factory announced four big promotions and a number of job opportunities within their organization.

Charlotte, NC - At the recent Seed the South event, early stage startup founders and investors connected via a symposium and pitch competition. Curu, which helps people build and improve their credit, was the Big Pitch winner and tool-renting platform Xchange Post was the Quick Pitch winner, while employee engagement service Jam won the crowd favorite prize.

Dallas, TX - Plano-based software provider YourCause has been acquired by Charleston, South Carolina-based Blackbaud in a deal valued at roughly $157 million. The city of Dallas has created a new Office of Innovation, bringing on Laila Alequresh as the Chief Innovation Officer.

Jackson, MS - The first two classes of computer programmers have graduated from Mississippi Coding Academies. Twenty students recently successfully completed an 11-month, full stack curriculum, and a second cohort of students is expected to graduate this May. The academy is currently taking applications for the third cohort starting in June 2019.
