Kelley Griggs, founder of Southern/alpha, a blog that ran from 2012-2015 on startups in the south, is back with a new resource for our region’s startups, particularly those based in Nashville. LaunchLetter is a weekday morning newsletter from Southern/alpha, featuring fellow founders and CEOs and their words of encouragement on incremental progress and positive habits. She’s also started StartupNash, a Slack chat group for anyone in Nashville building a startup.

April 1 - April 17

New Orleans, LA - We’re still coming off a high from the recent New Orleans Entrepreneur Week, which drew 3,500 attendees and awarded $300,000 in funds and services to local entrepreneurs during pitch competitions throughout the week. One of those competitions was the New Orleans Health Innovators Challenge, which awarded Elnaz Sarabchian, the founder of California-based MedAux, nearly $36,000 in project funding. The inaugural INNO Conference is coming up at the end of this month, and a full schedule has been released. Biotech startup Instapath recently got a $3MM CPRIT grant and are going to move to Houston. In STEM education news, Loyola University New Orleans announced a partnership that will lead student teams through the entrepreneurial process of assessing the commercial potential for technologies patented by the National Security Agency, and the BizTech Fellows Program, an entrepreneurship program for students at Louisiana historically black colleges and universities is seeking applicants. STEM NOLA was recently named one of 15 new ecosystems selected to join the global STEM Learning Ecosystems Community of Practice.

Atlanta, GA - Two years ago, the Atlanta chapter of national minority-focused pre-accelerator program Ascend2020 launched. At the program’s recent Demo Day, one of the largest cohorts of minority tech entrepreneurs in the country graduated. DelivHer, a feminine hygiene startup founded by two Georgia State students, took home $105K at the recent E-Fest National Entrepreneurship Challenge. Dematic, a supply chain software and services company, is relocating its global headquarters in Atlanta, and the minority-focused Russell Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation is preparing to open to its first members.

Austin, TX - Credit card giant Mastercard has acquired Austin financial-technology company Vyze Inc. for an undisclosed sum, while Austin-based publicly traded IT services company SolarWinds is acquiring Raleigh, NC based IT company Samanage for $350 million. App development company Phunware is laying off 23 people, which make up 15% of its staff. Global business software company Zoho is planning to move its headquarters to Austin, and Austin accounting automation software maker ScaleFactor has announced it will open its second office in Denver. One of Austin’s most active venture capital firms, LiveOak Venture Partners, announced it has closed on its second fund — worth $105 million - which has already been used in six investments. 

Charlotte, NC - At the recent 5th annual Blue Diamond Awards, local tech companies and startups were recognized. Rob Cummings from DealCloud won the IT Entrepreneurship award, while customer analytics and feedback company Stratifyd won the Cool Innovation award. Charlotte startup Battery Xchange was among the recent winners at the 6th Annual IdeaFest Pitch Competition.

Nashville, TN - One of Tennessee's biggest managed IT and print service providers, Novatech, is acquiring DynaSis, one of Atlanta's biggest IT outsourcing companies, in order to leverage their expertise in managed IT, cybersecurity and cloud solutions. Chattanooga startup FreightWaves and startup accelerator CO.LAB have announced the selected teams that will participate in the upcoming FreightTech Innovation Challenge, hosted in Chattanooga, on March 29-30. After receiving 141 individual applications from students representing 24 schools, 51 students from 15 schools were selected.

Tampa, FL - The finalists for Rise of the Rest 8.0 have been announced, and the list includes 40 growing startups from across Florida and Puerto Rico. The Tampa-St. Pete area is drawing praise for its innovation culture, and the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship is currently hosting is first cohort, educating them on how to make the leap from medium-size to large markets. Meanwhile, Miami-based Nearpod acquired Flocabulary, a maker of a student creativity platform which uses educational hip-hop to engage students and increase achievement.
