The awards recognize the accomplishments of women from across the Gulf South region, including Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and Texas.

This year there are six distinct categories: Software Engineer, Tech Founder, Product Manager, UI/UX Designer, Digital Marketer, and STEM Educator.

February 7 - February 27

New Orleans, LA - The headliners for this year’s New Orleans Entrepreneur Week have been announced, and they include Jim Clark, co-founder of Netscape and Jim Barksdale, former CEO of Netscape. Registration for the event, which will feature more than 130 speakers and events March 25-29, is now open. The inaugural INNO Conference, to take place April 29 - May 2, is partnering with Startup of the Year for a pitch competition and showcase; the deadline to apply is March 22. As the fastest growing chapter of Entrepreneurs’ Organization in the nation, EO Louisiana has been selected as the host of the 2020 XCentric conference, a “multi-day learning event” that connects entrepreneurs with world-renowned speakers and business leaders. The New Orleans BioInnovation Center has been picked as the statewide partner for the new Southeast Xlerator Network life sciences accelerator program, while Launch Pad recently raised $1.3 million to continue the expansion of their network of co-working spaces in Opportunity Zones across the U.S. Local tech firm iSeatz is celebrating 20 years in business this year, and they are expanding and hiring in several key roles

Atlanta, GA - Atlanta-based marketing platform Mailchimp has acquired local startup Sawa, an automated graphic design platform that went through Techstars Atlanta’s third cohort in 2018. Venture firm LOUD Capital recently established a new office in Atlanta along with two funds primarily focused on investing in Atlanta and the Southeast. The University of Georgia is in the early stages of creating a new Innovation District, while Georgia officials are exploring the possibility of using autonomous ‘microtransit pods’ from startup Transit X to transport residents on thin rails high above traffic. Atlanta-based digital identity verification company IDology is being acquired by British identity data company GBG for $300 million.

Austin, TX - A recent report from the Austin Chamber of Commerce shows that venture capital funding for Austin startups hit historic levels last year. $1.3 billion was invested across 124 Austin companies, which was a 70% increase from the previous year. To continue that growth, private equity firm Strattam Capital has closed on its second fund with $230 million, earmarked for SaaS companies, while Quake Capital is raising a new $100 million fund for early-stage startups. San Antonio-based B2B SaaS focused venture equity firm, Scaleworks, also closed its second flagship fund with $80 million in capital commitments recently. Notley Ventures’ Center for Social Innovation announced a new philanthropic investment and partnership with DivInc, an accelerator dedicating to helping startups led by diverse founders. 

Dallas, TX - The Dallas Entrepreneur Center Network recently announced the launch of its Innov8te Smart Cities Incubator, which will focus on supporting urban and civic transformation via emerging technologies and data and connectivity upgrades. Last week Southern Methodist University broke ground on their new innovation hub: the Gerald J. Ford Hall for Research and Innovation is being built to encourage advanced computing and interdisciplinary research at SMU.

Greenville, SC - South Carolina-based early stage investment firm VentureSouth has announced record-setting results for a fifth consecutive year. In 2018, they grew their membership to nearly 300 investors and invested $7 million in 22 Southeastern startups, up from $4.5 million in 2017. VentureSouth made first-time investments in new portfolio companies 6AM City, Sharpen, Sentio, Threatswitch, ecomdash, Emergo Therapeutics, and Spiffy. They also made follow-on investments to help accelerate the growth of prior portfolio companies, including Atlas Organics, Kwipped, and Brightfield Transportation.

Tampa, FL - South Florida unicorn ConnectWise has agreed to be acquired by Thoma Bravo, a technology-focused private equity firm. The significance and size of the transaction could put extra emphasis on Tampa Bay as the next technology hotspot. Clearwater-based cyber-security firm KnowBe4 has acquired a Brazilian phishing simulation startup, while Joi Scientific, based at the Kennedy Space Center, recently announced that it is co-developing a hydrogen production system to enable the world’s first electricity grid that uses hydrogen as a baseload.
