photo of rev. erin walterI Am A Markered Couch
By Rev. Erin J. Walter

So often people ask, "How do you do all the things you do?" I can never decide whether to take this as a compliment or whether to start rattling off all my major insecurities, fears, and embarrassments. “Thank you! You should see my paper piles and dust bunnies!” I say, trying to strike a balance of gratitude and messy honesty when I can. (If you ever want to talk about being simultaneously bold and insecure, please holler.)

photo of a tattered tan cloth couch with a shadow of a person waving in the foregroundA much as anything, though, when I get questions like that, I think of THIS COUCH. Y'all, THIS WAS OUR COUCH. It was our couch for 11 years. And it was used when I bought it -- $40 from Brown Elephant charity resale shop back in Chicago. For years, this couch needed to go, but with rowdy kids, a busy husband, and me trying to get through seminary, I couldn't deal with it.

This couch, like so many things, was triaged for the sake of other goals and dreams. This couch, for better or worse, is one of the ways I manage to be a minister, a musician, and a mother. I wait 11 years to spend an ounce of time, energy, or money on furniture.

Attention: Administrators, Presidents, and Ministers

As we begin the new church year, this is a friendly reminder to update your congregation’s leadership information in my.uua.org anytime there are changes to staff or lay-leadership in your congregation. This is the primary resource we (and your UUA) use to share important information with congregational leaders and staff. It is particularly important that you include email addresses for all your lay-leaders and staff. We need your help in keeping the information current and complete!

Help Support A Robust Justice Ministry in New Orleans
After their members, First Unitarian Universalist Church of New Orleans (FUUNO)’s building is its greatest asset – large, centrally located, with room for many community partners and activities. It has long served as a vibrant hub for social justice activities and they are now poised to expand its potential. FUUNO seeks one-time support to continue as strong community partners, modeling and living UU values and principles in our larger community.

Update from the UUA Religious Education Credentialing Committee

The Religious Education Credentialing Committee (RECC), in an effort to dismantle white supremacy practices in our credentialing processes, has been working with MMAPEU Consulting over the past church year to evaluate and assess our programs for barriers to access. The first tangible outcome of this ministry is to share our new Mission, Vision, and Values Statement, placing our Unitarian Universalist faith and values at the core of all we do. Please review the new RECC Mission, Vision, and Values statement and consider if the Religious Education Credentialing Program is right for you or a religious educator near you! Contact the UUA’s Professional Development Programs Manager, Rev. Sarah Gettie McNeill, for more information.
