Here are some strategies to improve your focus/manage your time (these strategies were taken from a webinar offered by the Canadian Management Centre):
- observe your own habits - self-awareness
- build your capacity to focus
- develop an email checking schedule
- don't expect instant responsiveness from others
- turn off texting notifications
- schedule blocks of time to focus on important tasks
- use private work spaces to focus
- take regular technology offline holidays
- cultivate mindfulness
Just as your computer slows down when you get it to do more than one thing, our productivity and effectiveness is decreased when we try to do more than one thing. But, there is an appropriate time to multi-task, such as:
- when performing routine tasks
- while waiting
- when the outcome isn't critical
There are times, however, when we should not multi-task:
- when the task requires clear focus & concentration
- when in a hurry
- when being distracted erodes the relationship
