DanCIS Holds Spring Recital!

The CIS DanCIS program* held their spring recital in May. The girls took the audience through a "night at the movies." Thank you to our volunteer dance instructor, Erin Southwell, for coordinating this event. Also, a big thank you to Pauletta Parker for donating to our DanCIS program in honor of the North Wilkesboro Women's club.

*This project receives support from the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources, with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.

We're Headed to College!

The wet and soggy day didn't stop us from hosting our 16th Annual Headed to College Race on May 11th! We had 156 runners who braved the elements and completed the race. Congratulations to Moravian Falls Elementary! They were awarded $2,000 for their PE department (made possible by the Health Foundation) for having the most participation in the race with 37 runners! Wilkesboro Elementary finished in 2nd place with 22 runners and North Wilkesboro finished in 3rd with 15 runners.
Politicians Get Involved!
CIS of NWNC staff along with board member, Dr. Jennifer Hefner met with Representative Jeffrey Elmore at Stony Point Elementary School in May. Site coordinator, LeRone Gore, took him on a tour and was able to showcase a few of his students and programs. Thank you for visiting CIS of NWNC, Representative Elmore!

Congresswoman Virginia Foxx spoke to a group of 5th grade girls at Wittenburg's PowHer lunch, organized by Dawn Waugh. Thank you for visiting CIS of NWNC, Congresswoman Foxx!

"Oh, the Places You'll Go!"

Sixteen of our New Century Scholar students graduated from high school in May! While the next chapter looks different for each student, we know they will exceed in all of their future endeavors. We are so proud of our NCS graduates!

Kenia, a student at East Wilkes High School, was awarded the New Century Scholars Trooper Samuel N. Ballard Memorial Scholarship for $500. She is pictured above (on right) with Trooper Ballard's niece, Laura Felts, and CIS staff member, Melissa Higgins. Congrats, Kenia!
CISNWNC & Shoes For Kids Partner In One Day Event!

Fawn Roark, CIS coordinator at Ashe County Middle School, and Shoes For Kids partnered together in May to serve over 130 students with a new pair of shoes. The Shoes For Kids party is held to ensure that students have a brand new pair of shoes that fit well for the summer. We appreciate all they do for students in Ashe!

Friends of Youth Finale!

Students and their mentors gathered to celebrate the finale of the Friends of Youth program. The students were given a bag of food from the Justice Project to take home and school supplies for the next school year. Then, they were treated to a night of bowling, laser tag, and fun with their mentors at Bo's in Lenoir! We would like to thank all of our dedicated mentors over the years for their service to this program.

#DYK on average, students' achievement scores declined over summer vacation by one's month worth of school-year learning? We hope our students have a great summer and that they keep reading to keep their skills sharp!
