In Schools to keep kids in school.

Girls on the Run is in full swing at our three sites in Wilkes County. Year after year, a grant from the Health Foundation allows us to provide full scholarships for our students to participate for free. The Girls on the Run mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Site coordinators at Moravian Falls, North Wilkesboro and Central Wilkes Middle School broker in this program for 45 students total. Each site is always in need of volunteers to help with practice and serve as running buddies in the 5k at the culmination of the program. Many people who are interested in the program are afraid to jump in because they aren't "runners." We assure you, volunteers do not have to be avid runners, and they rarely are. We only ask for passionate and supportive adults who are willing to try their best with the girls. Contact Tiger@cisnwnc.org if you're interested in getting involved with the Girls on the Run program.

New Century Scholars Class of 2024

Communities In Schools of NWNC held the New Century Scholars Induction Ceremony for the class of 2024 on Sunday, September 30th at Wilkes Community College. 24 sixth grade students from all over Wilkes County were admitted into the New Century Scholars program at the end of the 2017-18 school year. Counselors from each middle school choose students who show great promise and motivation to participate in the CIS program. At the end of the program, all New Century Scholars will receive a 2 year scholarship to Wilkes Community College, made possible by individual donors and community businesses. Each student has committed to complete 10 hours of community service every year until graduation in an effort to give back to the community that gave to them. Throughout the program, all students will be followed by the NCS Program Coordinator, Vickie Call. She will ensure they are on the right path academically, provide necessary services to be sure they succeed and surround the students with a community of support.
