January is National Mentoring Month!

The consistent, enduring presence of a caring adult in a young person’s life can be the difference between staying in school or dropping out, making healthy decisions or engaging in risky behaviors, and realizing one’s potential or failing to achieve one’s dreams. - The Mentoring Effect, A report for MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership

CIS of NWNC Volunteer of the Month

Susan Cogdill came to North Wilkesboro Elementary as a speaker for the Pow-Her lunch program; a program that provides 5th grade girls with the opportunity to listen to and speak with a successful woman from the community. Since then Susan has volunteered with Communities In Schools of NWNC, within North Wilkesboro Elementary, every Friday teaching a yoga class for students after school. Each time she visits North Wilkesboro Elementary School, she has a bright smile on her face and a “ready to get started” attitude. Over the times that she has been to the school, she always leaves a positive impact on each student. North Wilkesboro Elementary School and Communities In Schools of Northwest North Carolina look forward to working more with Mrs. Cogdill. It is an honor to award her with the CISNWNC Volunteer of the Month Award.

Love to Run?
Want to get involved?
Now is your chance.

CISNWNC is looking for volunteers to help with running programs this spring. Let Me Run is a program that involves lessons about life and social skills, while training for a 5k race. The program will begin mid-March and last until May 12th, which is the Headed to College 5k Race. Practices will be held two days, each week, that will last one and a half hours (3:30-5). Volunteers should be able to work well with children, like to exercise, and feel comfortable covering life and social skills lessons. North Wilkesboro Elementary School is looking for one to two assistance coaches. Moravian Falls Elementary School is looking for a head coach and assistant coaches. If you or anyone you know fits this description and would like to help out, we would love to have you. Come run with us!
DanCIS is growing!
DanCIS added a class for 6 and 7 year olds!  Last night we had five new participants in the new class, and three new participants in other classes.  The DanCIS program now serves a total of 25 girls in Wilkes County! Shout out to Erin Southwell, our wonderful, dedicated volunteer dance instructor.
