1. Skills that won't be automated
"The jobs that are likely to be automated are repetitive and routine. They range from reading X-rays (human radiologists may soon have much more limited roles), to truck driving, to stocking a warehouse. While much has been written about the sorts of jobs that are likely to be eliminated, another perspective that has not been examined in as much detail is to ask not which jobs will be eliminated but rather which aspects of surviving jobs will be replaced by machines." - Read more about emotion, context and soft skills. Link
2. Dogs talking with Humans
"Welcome to the new world of dog-human communication, where technology is allowing dogs to “speak” in ways we can easily understand when it really counts. If that same dog had run up to you Lassie-style and tried to get your attention without the voice, you might not have followed him. You might have reached down to pet him or thrown a pinecone for him while his person suffered alone nearby. The vest is one of several emerging technologies a few universities are developing that could forever change the way working dogs (and probably pet dogs, down the road) can communicate with people—and the way people can communicate with dogs." 3. Paralysed man moves in mind-reading exoskeleton
A man has been able to move all four of his paralysed limbs with a mind-controlled exoskeleton suit, French researchers report. Thibault, 30, said taking his first steps in the suit felt like being the "first man on the Moon". His movements, particularly walking, are far from perfect and the robo-suit is being used only in the lab. But researchers say the approach could one day improve patients' quality of life. Thibault had surgery to place two implants on the surface of the brain, covering the parts of the brain that control movement.Sixty-four electrodes on each implant read the brain activity and beam the instructions to a nearby computer. Sophisticated computer software reads the brainwaves and turns them into instructions for controlling the exoskeleton. Link
4. AI Autocorrect
Tiny AI models could supercharge autocorrect and voice assistants on your phone. Researchers have successfully shrunk a giant language model to use in commercial applications. In addition to improving access to state-of-the-art AI, tiny models will help bring the latest AI advancements to consumer devices. They avoid the need to send consumer data to the cloud, which improves both speed and privacy. For natural-language models specifically, more powerful text prediction and language generation could improve myriad applications like autocomplete on your phone and voice assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant. Link
5. Preparing Students for an unknown Tech Future
Enter Mike Yates from Alpha School: "I believe the future of learning will incorporate adaptive learning software, used to maximize the human moments that teachers have with students in the classroom. Using the right apps and tech to accelerate the academic portions of the day allows time for other critical things like life-skills education, relationship building, and will enable students to focus on specific interest projects. " The premise that Alpha Schoo has is that kids will love school, learn twice as fast and they will learn life-skills. (see the theme!) Some tips from Yates:

" Let them fail. Children need to experience failure while the stakes are low, and while they have you, the parent or guardian to help them learn from it. Failure is a great teacher because it can help kids become self-aware. A self-aware adult knows how to capitalize on their strengths. We should be helping kids get to this point. So if they fall off the slide, pick them up, and encourage them to try again. If they don’t play much in the basketball game, don’t yell at the coach, help the child identify what skills they should work on, and empower them to practice.

Teach them to fish. There will be a moment when your child comes to you for help with their homework or with a project. Don’t give them the answers. Teach them how to find an answer. Teach them how to learn. Once a child knows how to learn, they can learn to do anything. 

Focus on happiness. So many parents push their kids to attend colleges or go into professions because it is the “right” school or the “best” job. We should encourage our children to do what they are passionate about, and what makes them happy." 6. Artificial Skin
"Scientists have developed a soft artificial skin that provides haptic feedback and could be used to help users of virtual reality feel their surroundings. the artificial skin is made up of silicone and electrodes, and thanks to a sophisticated self-sensing mechanism, has the potential to instantaneously adapt to a wearer’s movements. Scientists at EPFL’s reconfigurable robotics lab (RRL) developed the technology, which uses a system of soft sensors and actuators. this enables it to conform to the exact shape of a wearer’s wrist, providing haptic feedback in the form of pressure and vibrations." 7. Driverless Cars in London
Work to bring driverless cars to Britain’s streets has reached a milestone with the first demonstration of an autonomous fleet driving in a “complex urban environment” in London. Ford Mondeos fitted with autonomous technology from the UK tech firm Oxbotica operated on public roads around the former Olympic Park in Stratford this week. Directors of the £13.6m Driven programme, a partially government-funded consortium, said it had “exceeded their initial plan” and was a significant step in confirming autonomous vehicles could operate in real-life situations in a large European city. Oxbotica said first passenger trials of a separate venture, an autonomous ride-sharing taxi service planned with the cab firm Addison Lee in the capital, could now start in June 2020. Link
8. Smart Wellbeing
"Layer and Panasonic have designed a range of near-future product concepts, including a smart head massaging device and an AI-powered skin analysis that makes personalised, nutritious smoothies in response to the results. Called Balance of Being, the collection comprises six designs that use technology to enhance everyday rituals, in order to encourage more meaningful engagements with products and promote wellbeing in the home. Products include a smart cooking appliance, a skin analysis device that doubles up as a smoothie maker, an LED light treatment for hair, a smart head massager, and two skin care devices." Link
9. UPS Drone Delivery
"The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) gave UPS the go-ahead to create a fleet of drones to deliver packages with very few limitations on Tuesday, the first time it’s given such broad permission to a delivery company. The move essentially will allow UPS to create its own drone airline. The company’s UPS Flight Forward program now has full FAA Part 135 Standard certification to operate a fleet of drones beyond an operators’ line of sight and the ability to fly drones at night. The company’s  Matternet drones will at first be used for the delivery of medical products and specimens. “This is history in the making, and we aren’t done yet,” said David Abney, UPS chief executive officer, in Tuesday’s press release announcing the certification. “Our technology is opening doors for UPS and solving problems in unique ways for our customers. We will soon announce other steps to build out our infrastructure, expand services for healthcare customers and put drones to new uses in the future.”" Link
10. Fast Phoning
"A new study from researchers at the University of Cambridge has revealed that people are now typing on their smartphones almost as fast as they can on a keyboard. A good typist can type around 100 words per minute (WPM) on a desktop keyboard, but most of us only type around 35-65 WPM. According to the research, people using two thumbs can achieve typings speeds averaging 38 WPM on smartphones. “[That’s] only about 25% slower than the typing speeds we observed in a similar large-scale study of physical keyboards," Anna Feit, a researcher at ETH Zürich and co-author of the study said in a statement. Feit said the number of people who can achieve speeds of 100 WPM on a keyboard is decreasing." Oh, and writing is dead. I couldn't really decipher what I wrote on paper ten years ago. These days it's a bit like a 2-year-old's scribble.  Link
