FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE
AGAINST CAPITALISM

AN ECOSOCIALIST LOOK AT THE GREEN PARTY LEADERSHIP RACE

The push to elect an ecosocialist leader of the federal Green Party signals a growing understanding that capitalism is the root cause of climate change. This is an encouraging development, and we hope this initiative succeeds.

We know the struggle to build a post-capitalist world is a long term project, even though catastrophic harms caused by climate change are happening right now. Many people all over the world are committed to building a sustainable world for us all. For a project so massive in scope, effective strategy is essential.

Because of the critical stakes at play, we need to consider seriously what gains can be made by a federal Green Party with an ecosocialist at the helm. ...(click here to read FULL STATEMENT)

PERSPECTIVES ON UNIVERSAL BASIC INCOME

Some thoughts from Toronto based anti-poverty organizer, John Clarke, on the present surge of support for the concept of basic income - "It is being orchestrated by our enemies but we must face up the reality that many of our friends have been convinced. Those of us who see the dangers posed by this need to consider how we need to respond." (click here to watch video)

AGAINST THE MARKET: WE CAN DO BETTER THAN BASIC INCOME
by Simran Dhunna and David Bush for Spring magazine

Basic Income is now on the table. This was the message that Canada’s Labour Minister, Filomena Tassi, gave reporters at the Liberal caucus retreat in early September. With the Canadian Economic Recovery Benefit (CERB) set to wind down by the end of September, calls for a basic income have re-emerged. Should the left support it?  (click here to read full article)

HOW DO WE FIGHT THE FAR RIGHT?

Tempest Magazine is hosting a discussion on
Sunday, Oct 11th 1 pm PT/4 pm ET
How Do We Fight the Far Right?  Register in advance for this meeting

With open encouragement from Donald Trump, and often working hand-in-hand with local police, the far right in the US has become a serious threat. White supremacists have driven cars into Black Lives Matter rallies. They no longer just bring guns to protests, they are prepared to use them. Many on the left believe that the rise of neo-fascism has created a real threat to what is already very limited democracy in the US. Join a discussion on the nature of the far-right movement and how we can organize to defeat it.

Speakers:
Joe Allen has been an active socialist for four decades. In the 1990s he was a member of the Midwest Network to Stop the Klan. During the last decade he has regularly written on the far right in U.S. history and contemporary politics. He is a member of the Chicago DSA.

Isabelle is an antifascist activist originally from Rochester, NY. She’s been a street medic on the frontlines of the recent Black Lives Matter protests in her new home of Portland, Oregon for the last three-and-a-half months.

Robert Cuffy is a revolutionary socialist who is a co-founder or the Socialist Workers Alliance of Guyana. He lives in Brooklyn, works in Child Welfare and is a rank & file member of DC37 Local 371 and a member of DC37 Progressives Caucus. He is also part of the Afrosocialist Caucus and Labor Branch of the NYC DSA.

Megan Lessard is a member of New York City for Abortion Rights.
