Fall 2019 Newsletter

It's Been an Awesome Autumn at ARTsmart
ARTsmart Estate Sale Success
With the help of over 30 volunteers and past and present board members the ARTsmart Estate Sale proved to be a successful fall fundraiser. We met so many new faces! Hundreds came to the ARTsmart Community Studio and spent thousands of dollars to take home great deals in fine art, jewelry, clothes, furniture, and housewares during this one-day sale. Special thanks go out to co-chairs/underwriters Karan Ruhlen and Connie Axton as well as Bella Media, Madera Antiques & Estate Sales, Hutton Broadcasting and our hard-working event committee members.
Underway: The Children's Painted Ceramics Project
We are thrilled to have the SFPS 5th grade painters back inside the ARTsmart Community Studio for the Children's Painted Ceramics Project painting sessions this year. Their amazing colorful designs are transferred to ceramic pieces and will be available to the highest bidder at ARTsmart's All You Need is Love Annual Dinner & Auction on April 4th to raise money for the Visiting Artist Program. This year there will be dinner plates and large serving platters as well as two stylish series sets of twelve 11" dinner plates to choose from: Symbols of the Southwest in stunning black and white, and a Geometric series in bright, bold colors.
A special thank you goes out to our wonderful volunteers who helped trace the designs and assist young artists at the glaze painting sessions. Everyone is invited to see the finished product and congratulate the 5th grade artists at the reception on Saturday, February 8th.
ARTsmart Board Welcomes New Member Anna Vanderlaan

Anna has created and studied art for the past 45 years, including 5 years on the Santa Fe Plaza as a portrait artists. She works professionally as a realtor with 21 years experience and is currently one of the top 20% of realtors in Santa Fe.

On joining the ARTsmart Board of Directors she says,
"I joined the ARTsmart team to support the arts in school. Art for all ages helps develop the brain and creates a balance in life. Regardless of a person's personal or professional life there is always need for creative thinking in problem solving. Art provides tactile experience that is becoming even more necessary in an electronically driven world. And art provides release and relief in a complex and stressful world. Art inspires and provides balance in humans and needs to be supported in our children."

Meet the Artist: Jordan, 3rd Grade
Meet Jordan, 3rd grade ARTsmart ARTreach student. He loves art because he gets to make anything from his imagination. He loves to draw and enjoys working with all art materials. Here he is holding a tin engraving of a seashell to reflect the day's lesson: patterns in nature. The inspiration for the design on the shell came from the Koru spiral symbol for spiritual growth, life, and peace used in the animated movie Moana.
