February News from Coos Sand 'N Sea Quilters

Note From our President

Thank you Sherry Church and Jeannie Berger for volunteering to be the quilt show chairs.  At the general meeting many of you stepped up and offered to help them on a committee.  They would like you to email them with that offer. They didn't get it all written down.

In your e-mails you got a nominating survey.  Please be sure to fill it out and return it before the March 1st meeting.  Also please be thinking about S.A.R.A. (special appreciation recognition award) and featured quilter nominees.  Look at all the fun things coming up.

What are you working on?  Currently I have a serious scrap addiction.  I have several Bonnie Hunter quilts going all at the same time.  I'm blowing through my stash of 2.5" strips but for some reason my other scraps are growing all by themselves.  How does that happen.  I also finished one more UFO.  Have you been working on yours?

See you all soon.  Love you my friends.
In March we are displaying quits at the Coos Bay library.  We are having a nautical theme this year, so please bring any quilts you would be willing to loan for the display (the library takes very good care of them) to the meeting on March 1.  Also, if you can help with the hanging, please let Karen Wagner know - this is a fun project and the library always looks forward to having the quilts there for the month.

We would like the quilter to please have a label on the quilt that has their Name and number so they can be reached if need be.  Call Karen if you would like to help hang or have quilts or quilt to hang. For large to medium  quilts  a sleeve would be needed.    It will be one hour before they open in the morning. The quilts will be hanging for the Month.  We would like to have someone step forward to head this up next year, it’s a small commitment, but the library loves our display as well as the library patrons!
Thanks,  Karen  541-404-4419

From our Vice President:

Wow, another month has flown by me way too quick.  I'm sorry I missed Linda's program last month, I'm sure I missed some good tips and info.

Our program for March will be presented by our own Shirley Hammar.  Shirley will be giving a program on Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Sounds fun, excited to see what she brings.

In April, we will have Lawry Thorn from Sisters, Oregon here to give a Presentation of her quilts on Thursday April 5th, and on Friday April 6th we will have a workshop available.  Class will be "Just a Fun Quilt-while mastering partial seams".  Grab a Jelly Roll, some background fabric, and your sewing machine for a fun filled, easy going, relaxing, sewing day enjoyed with friends.  The class is limited to 20 people and I will have sign up sheets at the March meeting, hopefully with a little more information for you. Class cost will be $20.00. When you sign up please have a check or cash, Thank You.

May...Still working on something fun.......

In June the Brown Bag projects are due, so if you have not started yet (that would be me) you better get busy as time flies by too fast and it will be June before we know it.

Also, if you gave me a UFO sheet and have finished some of your projects, make sure and let me know so that I can check them off the sheet. Each one finished gives you a chance for the Prize.

If there are any questions on any of the above, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Happy Quilting

Block of the Month

Congratulations to Martha Moehring for winning the red/pink/purple February blocks. Carol Pomes has put together a block for the March meeting. I haven’t seen it yet, but Carol’s offerings are always terrific.
See you in March.

If you’re interested in handling the Block of the Month, please get in touch with me for details. I will be stepping down at the end of the year. It’s a pretty well-oiled machine by now with the leader’s tasks kept to a minimum. Talk to me!!

Carol Todd is going to give the block demo at the Guild Meeting.

April Block

During our March meeting the following business needs to be taken care off:

Nominating Committee to present slate of officers for the following year.
Ask for nominations from the floor for all 5 positions.
Close nominations.  (We need at least one nomination for each office)
Quilt Show Block Challenge rules are announced.
Featured Quilter nomination forms to be turned in to the Quilt Show chairman.
SARA nomination forms to be turned in to the Parliamentarian.
Appoint Committee for 2018-2019 Raffle Quilt - this is a great way to be involved, grab some friends, and lets make a great quilt for next year!

In lieu of a committee calling each member of the guild we have provided an online form, if we do not have sufficient nominees for our offices we will need to take nominations from the floor in order to fill the ballot.  Below is brief summary of the Officers of Coos Sand 'N Sea Quilt Guild.  I have also attached a link to a more comprehensive document if you would like more information.  Please consider serving as an officer for the guild next year.  Click the link below to fill out the form if you have not done so already.

President: The President shall preside at all business and board meetings of the organization and shall appoint all committee chairmen. At the President’s discretion, after consulting with the Board, the President shall act on matters whenever they cannot be taken up at a regular meeting.
Vice-President: The Vice-President shall perform the duties of the President in case of the President’s absence or disability and serve as Program/Workshop Chairperson.
Secretary: The Secretary shall keep a record of all meetings of the Board and organization. The book of minutes shall contain a copy of the Bylaws, Amendments and Job Descriptions.
Treasurer: The Treasurer shall keep a record of all money received and distributed and shall perform the duties as defined in the Job Description. In the event of inability to act as Treasurer, the President is authorized to make such payments and disbursements until a new Treasurer can be appointed.
Parliamentarian: The Parliamentarian shall be present at all business meetings to ensure that proper rules of order are followed.
Download the complete list of duties of officers.

We will also be nominating members for SARA and for Featured Quilter for the show.  The nomination form includes a list of the past winners of both of these honors.
Sherry and Jeannie will also be asking for volunteers to fill any open Quilt Show Committees - we know you are all excited about our annual show and want to help, so be ready to help us put on the best show ever!  This is the way we need to support our Chairmen, and will make their job a pleasure - we all should pitch in, help with the work and let them know how much we appreciate them taking this on!

Connie Stevens is our Sunshine Chair - if you know of a guild member that needs a card or some encouragement, please feel free to let her know!

You can reach her by phone:  541 580 4088 or email

Celebration of life for Diane Boyer will be held on March 17, 2018, at 1 p.m. in the Masonic Lodge at 295 N. 4th St. in Coos Bay.

SARA - Ruthe Garagnon

WOW! Another 12 quilts were taken to the CASA office since the February meeting. The generosity of our members has made the CASA project a major success. The grand total so far is 51 quilts! Liz from CASA is planning to come to the March meeting to personally thank the membership for the generous donations. There will also be a couple of stories told of children who have received a quilt.

Thank you again for the great participation in the project.
