Dear Clients and Friends,

It’s been two months of school already! It’s hard to describe what the impact of that has been. The schedule is brutal with unrelenting long days. And yet there are moments where a new piece of knowledge connects with something I’ve felt under my hands for years and a three-dimensional aliveness grabs me by the intellect and shows me something of our scintillating humanity. I feel right in my choice to endure this challenge, even as the sacrifices start to pile on.

Learning is a completely different experience in middle age. It is harder to submit to rules after so many years of being feral. But academically, it has been a surprisingly efficient process--easy to determine what I know and don’t know which leads to a kind of laser focus, penetrating what might otherwise be an overwhelming amount of information.

It has been interesting to compare this kind of learning to the process of healership. When clients come to me they have often been feeling stuck, or lost, or in pain for quite some time. There is a sticky quality to their experience, like a cold that just won’t clear up. Then through time, and settling, and care, there is a clarifying process, something like the sinuses drying, where energy realigns and allows insight to rise up from the depths to inspire sweeping and important change.

I would encourage all of us to make sure that we have both kinds of learning in our lives--one based in the acquisition of new knowledge and one centered in receptivity and flow. Taking in new information is a skill that, once atrophied, is hard to regain, but beingness is equally important. Without the capacity to sit with ourselves, we can feel lost and out of touch with who we really are.

I encourage us all this summer to take inventory of our preferences and see if there is a way to reintroduce challenges to the parts of ourselves that might be just outside of our comfort zone. For me, I’ve got multiple bioscience classes to push me to my limit, but I suspect, at the end of them, I’ll be better for it. Probably my imagination will gain the most after being squeezed into a box for so very long. And also, the power of the mind is something I can also take pride in and cherish. There will be interesting associations that come with new knowledge to help us all heal.

What will you opt into this summer, I wonder, and how will you play and grow? Really looking forward to hearing from those of you inspired to stretch yourselves, literally and figuratively.

See you all soon, I hope. And Happy PRIDE!!!!!

With folded palms,

Jennifer

P.S. Stay tuned for massage practice sessions, coming soon…..
