FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!
As a safety inspector, I am ever mindful of the issues your home may face with each new season. July, with it's fireworks and cookouts, is a good month to discuss how to reduce your risk of a house fire.
  • Remember there are fire hazards outside your home too. Keep barbecue grills, meat smokers and fire pits away from vegetation and siding. These flammable materials can quickly ignite and engulf a home in flames.
  • Dispose of cigarette butts safely, Recently, a town home caught fire because of an errant lit cigarette on the back porch. ZllnThe ash tray was placed next the the vinyl siding which then caught it on fire. The fire traveled up the siding and once it was in the attic it spread quickly.
  • Be mindful during these drought conditions in North East Kansas to not provide an ignition source to start a fire.
  • It is vital to have your smoke alarms working properly along with a proper carbon monoxide detector. The goal is to give you and your family time to get out of the house safely.
  • Develop and practice a fire exit plan with everyone who lives in your home. This should include a location outside of your home to meet so fire fighters can account for everyone.
