Connecting in 2021

I spend a lot of time listening to podcasts, searching the internet, and of course, the library catalog to find great teaching ideas that are relevant for right now.  One site that has caught my attention for all of the great ideas and free content available is Spark Creativity! A Fresh Approach to Teaching. Check out the blog post about strategies that build connections in the classroom during distance learning here.

Novel Effect

Read Aloud Reboot

Looking for a way to energize your read alouds? Check out the app Novel Effect, "a free, award-winning app that brings books to life with music, sound effects, and character voices."

This voice-driven read aloud app is a super fun way to add a little flair to an important literacy activity. Older students may like the challenge of using the app to create a unique read aloud to share with younger students.

Rogue Reads

Community Reading

Through February, Rogue Reads features discussions and programs on books by bestselling author Jacqueline Woodson. Explore the timely themes of race, family dynamics, and identity while sharing conversations that build common ground. Join us for an exciting virtual author talk and check out and Ms. Woodson's incredible books for all ages. Don't miss it!
Heart and Soul by Kadir Nelson

Black History Month

Celebrate Black History with students by reading stories of African Americans overcoming adversity and making their mark on the world, such as Henry's Freedom Box by Ellen Levine and Heart and Soul by Kadir Nelson.

Organization Library Cards for Educators

Take advantage of JCLS's rich collection for your students.

Organization library cards are separate from personal library cards and allow you to borrow materials to use in your classroom or with students. If you teach children in childcare, teach kindergarten through grade 12 in Jackson County, homeschool, or teach in your community, you can apply for an Organization Library Card.

What can an Organization Library Card do for you?

  • No fees for late returns on books, CDs, or DVDs.
  • Borrow up to 60 items.
  • Borrow books for 6 weeks, Borrow DVDs for 21 days. Regular lending periods apply to other materials.
  • Place holds on up to 40 items.
