SW Community Reads Event – Ida B. Wells

Join us as our community reads and learns about Ida B. Wells-Barnett, the new namesake of our high school and a powerful advocate for equity, education and civil rights.

The PTAs of the Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School feeder schools have joined together to purchase copies of books that will be available to our community through your school library. The books are:

To purchase your own copies of these books or any others, we recommend supporting Third Eye Books (a local Black-owned bookstore) and Annie Bloom’s Books in Multnomah Village.

Digital Books About Ida B. Wells

Three e-book biographies about Ida B. Wells (levels kindergarten to 5th grade) are available for check out in the Hayhurst Destiny catalog.

The Multnomah County Library also has digital copies available throughout March.

Stay tuned for more information about a speaker event, hosted by the high school, with Dan Duster, the great-grandson of Ida B. Wells-Barnett.

Read Across Differences Month:
Reading Without Walls

To celebrate Read Across America this year we are taking it a step further!

READING WITHOUT WALLS promotes diversity and opens readers’ eyes to new ideas and experiences. In this divided time in our nation’s history, READING WITHOUT WALLS is an inclusive way to spread appreciation and understanding for others — and to learn new and exciting things.

Hayhurst students will be challenged do to one of the following:

  1. Read a book (or have one read to you!) about a character who doesn’t look like you or live like you.

  2. Read a book (or have one read to you!) about a topic you don’t know much about.

  3. Read a book (or have one read to you!) in a format that you don’t normally read for fun. This might be a chapter book, a graphic novel, a book in verse, a picture book, or a hybrid book. Tumblebooks, the public library, and our library’s e-books are great resources!

Fill out this slip and have a parent/guardian sign it. Then return it during the weekly curbside checkout or email the completed form to Ms. Chambers at lchambers@pps.net by Friday, March 19th. Ms. Chambers will have a reading-themed prize to give out after Spring Break to all students that completed the challenge.

Please watch this video about Reading Without Walls.

Art Supply Pick-up is this
Friday Feb. 26th 2-4 PM

Please come to the school on Friday, February 26th, between 2-4 pm, to pick up a new collection of art supplies. In the bag of art supplies, you will also find a wooden Hayhurst Husky head to paint, which will later be displayed outside the school on the fence.
Note: this week's art lessons (Feb. 22nd-26th) are asynchronous only.
Hello Parents of Artists!

Thank you for all of the ways your children have inspired me in art class this year thus far!

You have some amazing, talented, funny, and clever children. A reminder that your child has an Asynchronous and a Live art class EVERY WEEK at a specific, given time. Don’t know the time? Please email me or their classroom teacher.

If for some reason your child cannot make the Live weekly class, there are BRAND NEW lessons posted every week on the ART SEESAW platform. I look at the turned in artwork and give personal notes back to EVERY single project turned in by the end of the day.

There are a lot of frustrating things brought on by the pandemic but one of the WONDERFUL things is me getting to hear about your child’s thinking when creating. When I am in the art room teaching there is rarely time for that! Please encourage your child to join me in one way or another.

Thank You
Thank you for all the effort and work you are putting into keeping your student engaged and learning!

FYI: Foothills Soccer Club Spring 2021 Recreational program

Due to COVID, Foothills Soccer Club had to cancel both seasons in 2020. Spring 2021 program details now available (program should open for games only on Saturdays).

Foothills has a return-to-play protocol in place. Families can review this policy as well as find the link to registration on Foothills’ website

The registration fee this year has been frozen at $70 per child to help offset the cost of field rentals. A substantial scholarship program that covers 10%-100% of this fee is available to all families regardless of their financial background.

Foothills is a volunteer run, not-for-profit club which depends on community support to help us in our mission to create a lifelong love of soccer in our kids.

Find Details on Foothills’ Website

FYI: SWPLL Baseball and Softball Registration Open

SWPLL (Southwest Portland Little League)’s upper level baseball and softball programs are open for registration.

Lower levels are expected to open soon, when we secure fields through PPS.
