Access grants between £500-£10k for professional arts organisations and community groups to support projects in any art form. Closes 31 March 2023.

€144.5m Horizon Europe Funding 

European research and innovation funding for research into cultural heritage and the creative industries, with a budget of €95.5 billion it runs until 2027. Includes the Horizon Europe Framework Programme (HORIZON), open to UK businesses.

 15 June: Future Fashion Factory Showcase 

Join leading designers and experts from across the fashion and textiles industry for a day of panel discussions, in-depth conversations and digital exhibitions. Share in the successes of projects funded by Future Fashion Factory and explore how the industry can ensure a more sustainable future, addressing key questions: What does the future hold for digital fashion? How can we support reshoring of fashion manufacturing to the UK? What do circular economies look like in practice? The showcase is produced by the Creative Economy Team

Call for Expressions of Interest: Hosting the Creative Industries Policy and Evidence Centre

The Creative Industries Policy and Evidence Centre (PEC) has announced that the UKRI's Arts and Humanities Research Council has committed to funding their work for a further five years. In addition, the PEC are looking for a new host organisation, leaving Nesta where they have been based for the last four years. Research organisations that are interested in hosting the PEC should respond to the call for Expressions of Interest by 21 July.

 30 June: 2022 Creative Informatics Innovation Showcase

The 2022 Creative Informatics Innovation Showcase is taking place in person and online on Thursday 30 June, celebrating a host of inspiring data-driven projects across the creative industries in Edinburgh and SE Scotland, with a jam-packed programme of presentations, panels and demos. This FREE all-day event offers the chance to find out more about some of the innovative products, services and experiences that have been developed by creative individuals and organisations with funding and support from Creative Informatics. The event features special guest speakers including creative entrepreneur and co-founder of BAFTA-winning games company Bossa Studios, Betta Luca.

Creative Informatics Challenge Projects Open

Applications are open for individuals and SMEs that would like to apply for £20k of funding to respond to six new Creative Informatics Challenge Projects set by organisations and collectives working across the creative industries in Edinburgh and beyond! The Challenge Holders in this final round of Challenge Projects are Edinburgh Printmakers, Arts Resource Management Scotland, Pollyanna, Outer Spaces, Fair Pley and the John Byrne Award. Applications close on Wednesday 22 June at 5pm.

New Survey: Covid-19, Brexit & Climate Change

The Business of Fashion, Textiles and Technology and Future Fashion Factory are launching a joint survey (max 15 minutes) targeting micro and small enterprises in the UK. The survey aims to find out the present state of affairs and the attitudes towards the future of UK companies, entrepreneurs and professionals in the fashion, textiles and technology sectors. It focuses on the current political, social and economic background, which is characterized by the impact of COVID-19 and Brexit, and by the climate emergency. The survey will be supported by case studies on a selected number of businesses, focusing on the themes of co-design, supply chain transparency, circularity and on demand production. The research will be published towards the end of 2022.

BFTT Awards R&D Funding to New UK Textile Recycling Programme

The Business of Fashion, Textiles and Technology SME support programme has recently awarded Research & Development funding to iinouiio – a pioneering UK textile recycling business. In March 2022, iinouiio became part of UK based Camira Group – a global fabric manufacturer with a far-reaching and longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainable products, and responsible processes. The two companies will work together to expand their fabric repurposing capabilities, using high value post-consumer and post-industrial textile materials.

Future Foundation Mentee Opportunities

Applications are now open for Future Screens NI’s Future Foundation, a mentoring programme aiming to match experienced practitioners to artists / creative freelancers in need of help and support. Mentees must have two years’ experience within Creative and Cultural Industries, not be in full-time education, primarily be based in Northern Ireland and be interested in developing and adapting new approaches and learning new skills.

Clwstwr Games Survey Wales Launched 

The aim of this report is to produce a detailed mapping of the video games sector in Wales. Authored by Clwstwr Co-Investigators Richard Hurford and Professor Ruth McElroy, this new piece of research highlights the skills challenges and training needs of the industry across Wales.

 22-24 June: Writing for Immersive Binaural Audio Lab

Immersive binaural sound is emerging as a key element of immersive content production, but how do writers conceptualise what makes an engaging binaural audio story? StoryFutures Academy invites writers of all backgrounds with little to no immersive binaural audio experience to join two half-days (22 and 24 June) for their ‘Writing For Immersive Binaural Audio Lab’, offering an introduction to binaural audio technology and how it is used. It will also address how spatial audio can impact a listener’s journey through the story, examples of how spatial storytelling can be used and more. Apply by 8 June.

New Report - The Creative Immersive Content Lifecycle: from Distribution to Restoration

This Audience of the Future report, produced in collaboration with UKRI and Digital Catapult, explores some of the challenges facing immersive productions throughout the lifecycle of immersive content, from finding funding at the pre-production phase through to distribution and evolution of the content post premiere. Aimed at commissioners, producers and collectors who work with immersive technologies, download the report to explore this research into the creative immersive content lifecycle.

Valkyrie EIR: Efficient Muscle Workouts in Virtual Reality

Valkyrie Industries is the first to bring efficient muscle workouts to virtual reality. As part of the Audience of the Future programme, Valkyrie Industries has applied its IP in immersive electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) to VR fitness. EMS improves muscular recovery, endurance and mobility, while VR makes sports fun and connected. In just over three months, Valkyrie has created the first prototype device and VR experience and demonstrated it to multiple users, receiving predominantly positive feedback. A variety of fitness companies, EMS manufacturers and VR developers have expressed interest, saying: “That’s not a regular workout, that’s something crazy!”

VP Futures - Development Zone Announcement

Eight leading immersive companies have successfully secured a place on the groundbreaking Virtual Production partnership programme ‘VP Futures’ with StoryFutures Academy and Future Screens NI, supported by Epic Games and Industrial Light & Magic. This new and innovative partnership will deliver a package of targeted virtual production training, development and production support for the creative screen industries in the UK. The eight companies are: Sunnyside, Engine House, Draw & Code, Liminal Stage Productions, Retinize, Aura Digital, Soluis and Taunt Studios.

20 Universities & Colleges Join Forces to Explore VR for Learning

20 Further and Higher Education institutions in the US, UK, EU and Canada have joined the Bodyswaps ILRP programme, one of the largest Immersive Education research programmes to date. Over 10,000 learners are expected to trial a range of VR experiences around soft skills such as active listening, giving feedback or answering job interview questions, throughout the six month programme. The content is provided by Bodyswaps and aims to measure the students’ appetite for immersive learning as well as learning performance through behavioural metrics such as decision-making and confidence levels data.

Inclusive Design Accelerator: Hyper Luminal Games & Sugar Creative Awarded £35k

The Inclusive Design for Immersive Experiences Challenge offers SMEs the opportunity to work directly with StoryFutures Academy and InGame to pilot an experimental Inclusive Innovation design. Recipients will learn how to apply innovative approaches and toolkits to design, test and deliver immersive content that provides better experiences for all, whilst creating immersive content that is more accessible and delightful to those with permanently lived experiences of disability - and any people who temporarily or situationally move, sense, think or feel differently. Inclusive design improves the reach, user experience and consistency of immersive experiences.

 13 - 15 June: CogX Festival & Leadership Summit 2022, London

Next week's CogX Festival is the world's biggest and most inclusive Festival of AI, Blockchain, the Metaverse and all the latest Transformational Technologies. The event will showcase 200+ speakers across 20 inspiring topics from leadership to ethics to health and our planet, combining the magic of an in-person experience and exclusive side events with 5m watching online, and addressing the question "how do we get the next 10 years right?"


 16 - 17 June: FREE Screen Innovation Lab | Advance: Wakefield x Creative Enterprise

Creative Enterprise has joined forces with Digital Catapult to bring together screen industry innovators for an exclusive two-day event at XPLOR, Research and Innovation Centre at Wakefield's Production Park, on 16 and 17 June.

Screen Innovation Lab will focus on building bridges and inciting collaboration in the creative practices of film, TV, gaming, animation, and immersive tech, as well as share insight on how to access funding. If you're a creative business (other areas also considered - feel free to attend) or freelancer based in Wakefield, Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield or Manchester, sign up here
